67 Journalism, Media, and Mass Communication Associate of Applied Science Programs

The Associate of Applied Science in Digital Media prepares students for careers in digital media, including print, web and video formats. The program combines strong technical preparation in current graphical software applications with courses that enhance the student’s creative talents. In this track, students have a choice to specialize in either graphic or web design.

American Sign Language/Interpreter Education Program (ASL/IEP) is a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program to train individuals to become ASL conversationalists and or professional ASL interpreters. Successful graduates of this program can seek job opportunities in settings such as educational, medical, legal, mental health, religious, social, and community-based employment. This program provides individuals with the professional knowledge and skills that meet or exceed the minimum professional standards necessary to perform in a broad range of interpreting assignments. This program will prepare individuals for the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) and Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS).

Similar to the 3D and Video Graphics Certificate, this degree prepares students for a career combining the skills of three-dimensional imaging and video production. In addition, it includes capstone courses that develop creative and practical skills beyond what is taught in the certificate program, as well as coursework that meets the general education requirements for a Schoolcraft associate in applied science (AAS) degree. The degree strengthens the student’s position in the profession and gives the student an academic credential with a higher standing.

The A.A. degree in Digital Mass Media offers students the first two years of courses and fieldwork which allows students to transfer into a baccalaureate program or to seek immediate employment. The program prepares for a variety of production positions at newspapers and magazines (print and online), radio and television stations, (and their associated Web sites), cable systems, video production companies and other production facilities. The program also prepares students for careers as publicity writers for public relations firms, advertising agencies, businesses, and organizations. The curriculum gives students hands-on writing, production and programming experience at the College radio station, television station, video editing/post production lab, literary magazine, and the print and online versions of the college newspaper. Students also gain experience in blogs, podcasts and other new media used by both professional and citizen journalists.

Trevecca’s Associate of Science in film production is a two-year degree that equips you for a variety of jobs in film, television, and media arts. You’ll acquire the skills to write, edit and produce media for the exciting industry of film production, or continue with your education to earn a Bachelor of Science in media arts and studies.

The Speech Communication Program at Kingsborough Community College is an Associate's degree in Applied Science offered during the day only. This major is jointly registered by the State Education Department for both Kingsborough Community College and Brooklyn College. It is designed to provide KCC students with the opportunity to complete the first two years of course requirements for the Brooklyn College B.A. program in SPEECH COMMUNICATION. We also have agreements with Pace University in Manhattan and Iona College in Westchester.

In today’s competitive global marketplace, organizations are spending more and more on winning the hearts and minds of consumers via marketing tools such as advertising, public relations, sales promotion, and professional selling. In the program at Berkeley College, you’ll learn to generate creative solutions to marketing problems through integrated communications. You’ll be exposed to all areas of marketing through a project-based curriculum developed with input from advisory boards of industry experts with particular emphasis on excellent communication skills, practical experience through coursework and hands-on learning, and technology used in various aspects of marketing.

The Photography program prepares students for employment as studio photographers, photographer assistants, lab/print specialists, freelance photographers, studio managers, and small business owners. Courses cover the fundamentals of photography through studio photography; historical processes through digital photography; the development of a photography portfolio; and the business of photography.

The Film, Television, and Electronic Media major consists of courses appropriate for the Associate in Science in Film, Television, and Electronic Media for Transfer degree, which provides a foundational understanding of the discipline, a breadth of coursework in the discipline, and preparation for transfer to any CSU that accepts the Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC). The Associate in Science in Film, Television, and Electronic Media for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in Film, Television, and Electronic Media (or an approved similar major) at a CSU campus. Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept this degree will be required to complete no more than 60 (semester) units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. This degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. In all cases, students should consult with a counselor for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.

The Digital Media program equips students with the skills necessary for the design of computer-generated applications and media. Areas include 3D animation and game design. The digital media program prepares students for employment in such areas as gaming, feature film, web design, video and commercial production, post-production, visual effects, and virtual and augmented reality. Students begin their training in classes in 2D and 3D fundamentals, imaging, and design. Students then study the aesthetic and design aspects of digital media with focused courses in graphic design, fine arts, and advanced imaging. This program transfers to the Bachelor's of Science in Media Arts in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

The Drafting Design program prepares student to take ideas, sketches and specifications and bring them to life. Students work with industry software and other hands on applications to learn industry standards for creating professional drawings in the architecture and mechanical fields. Channel your creativity as well as your mathematical, science and engineering skills into a career as a drafter. Using the latest industry software, students learn to create technical drawings that feature details, dimensions, materials and procedures used to build manufactured products, plus residential/commercial buildings and architectural drafting.

The Southwestern Illinois College Sign Language Studies/Interpreter Training program prepares students to work as interpreters for the deaf or hard of hearing community. Sign Language interpreting is a highly specialized field requiring an in-depth course of study as offered at SWIC. While the foundation of the curriculum is a commitment to American Sign Language, the professional sign language interpreter is a service provider who must be able to adjust to a broad range of consumer preferences for interpretation along a broad spectrum of communication.

Design and Media Production Technology This program of study emphasizes hands-on production in specialized areas. Graduates of the program received a Design and Media Production degree with specializations in Graphic Design and Prepress, Printing Operations, Web Interface Design, Computer Animation, or Motion Graphics, Photography or Video Production.
