The Vilnius Archcathedral Basilica and the Town Hall, designed in the 18th century by Laurynas Gucevičius, quickly became symbols of the city. As the most famous Lithuanian architect of his time, Gucevičius introduced a new direction in architecture - classicism based on interpretations of antique architecture heritage - and createdthe classicistic face of the city. While these two buildings were only two of many in the center of Vilnius, they clearly demonstrated the architect's ideas on social equality during the epoch of Enlightenment.

Degrees in Architecture Studies
Why study architecture?
Architecture is the art and science of designing and engineering houses, buildings, and other physical structures. While it’s considered an art form, architecture requires extensive scientific and mathematical knowledge, as well as practical and technical skills. In addition to creating structural designs that are aesthetically pleasing, architects are responsible for ensuring that structures are functional and safe for human use.
Architecture is an interdisciplinary, ever-evolving field that plays an important role in society, from regional planning and urban development to landscaping and home construction. If you’ve got an eye for design, a scientific mind, and dream of seeing your ideas come to life, then studying for an architecture degree could set you on the path towards a rewarding career.
Read on to discover more about the study of architecture, and find an architecture degree program from a top architecture school that’s best suited for you!

What will I learn in an architecture degree program?
Studying for an architecture degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary for your future career. Architecture degree programs include both left- and right-brain subjects, combining creative arts and design with courses in science, mathematics, and even business. Most architecture degree programs begin with introductory courses, where students will learn about architectural theory, architectural history, and architectural synthesis. However, depending on the architecture degree program, studying calculus, geometry, trigonometry, or physics may also be mandatory.
Additionally, architecture majors will take courses in architectural design and drafting, and gain skills in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) tools. From the second or third year onwards, architecture schools typically offer elective courses that give architecture majors the chance to study specialized topics such as landscape architecture, urban planning, and architectural engineering.
Besides building the foundation for a successful career, studying for an architecture degree from a top architecture school will help architecture majors develop soft skills like negotiation, critical thinking, and problem solving.
Most occupations in the architecture field require a bachelor’s degree at minimum, and many architects hold a master’s degree as well. However, there are a number of diploma and certificate programs in architecture that cover interior architecture, landscape architecture, and architectural technology, which range from 1-2 years in length.
Regardless of your education or professional goals, there are plenty of options available if you want to study architecture at some of the best architecture schools around the world:
- Diploma / Certificates in Architecture
- Bachelor’s Degrees in Architecture
- Master’s Degrees in Architecture
What can you do with an architecture degree?
Earning your architecture degree is only the first step towards becoming an architect. Before practicing at an architectural firm, most jurisdictions require architecture graduates to obtain licensure. In the United States, licensure candidates must report 3,740 hours of experience across the areas of practice management, project management, programming and analysis, project planning and design, project development and documentation, and construction. Finally, candidates must pass a licensing exam administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of architects is projected to grow 1 percent by 2029, with 1,100 new jobs. However, becoming an architect isn’t the only option for graduates. Potential career paths in the architecture field include drafter, carpenter, building surveyor, urban planner, and landscape architect. Many architecture majors go into real estate or the construction industry, as well.
