The Associate in Arts in Communication for Transfer Degree is designed to prepare students to complete the baccalaureate degree in communication upon transferring into the CSU system. Communication skills are essential to forming and maintaining personal relationships, acquiring and excelling in a job, and relating to the world around us. Through the study and practice of interpersonal, professional, and intercultural communication skills, students will learn how their perceptions and self-esteem affect their interactions with others.

The Associate of Arts degree at LaSalle College Vancouver prepares graduates for further study in a Faculty of Arts bachelor’s degree program at one of British Columbia’s universities. The program provides students a comprehensive liberal arts education in a supportive and nurturing learning environment and supports the development of strong critical thinking, communication, and research skills sought after by employers. Students can be expected to complete the program in 1 to 2 years.

The Communication Studies Transfer major focuses on how people construct, use, and interpret messages across multiple channels to inform, persuade, manage, relate, and generally influence each other within and across varying cultural venues. Emphasis is also placed on identifying and valuing disparate systems of social norms and values that influence the human communicative process.

The Associate of Arts in Journalism for Transfer provides a broad base of education in the discipline and introduces students to journalism and multimedia. It gives students the option of studying journalistic writing for traditional and online media. Completion of the degree provides students with the core skills and knowledge needed to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Journalism.

TCC's program provides an introduction to the concepts, theories, terminology, and current topics in the versatile and popular field of Communications. The Communication Studies (CMST) emphasis of the Associate of Arts (DTA) degree prepares students for the challenges of a world that are shaped by communication that is rich with intercultural exchange. Students specializing in Communication Studies examine and produce work in oral, written, media, and visual communication and practice critical skills in groups and one-on-one settings.

Communication is the study of how humans construct meanings through interactions. Courses in this area may focus on the knowledge and skills needed to communicate effectively in oral, written, or visual forms; on the study of language and culture; and/or on a critical understanding of the structures and patterns of different kinds of communication as they affect individuals and society. Studies in Communication, Media, and Languages are designed for students interested in pursuing further studies in English, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Communication Studies, and World Languages at four-year institutions. It may be useful for students interested in pursuing careers in communications, graphic design, journalism, law, marketing, public relations, radio and television, translating, and writing, among others.

The Media Arts program is a unique, interdisciplinary approach to the converging fields of journalism, communication, and new media technology. It responds to the need for people skilled in effective communications in all levels of society including industry, education, art and music, and the public arena.

The Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer (AA-T in Communication Studies) provides a clear pathway to a CSU institution for students who plan to transfer and complete a CSU major or baccalaureate degree in Communication Studies. Students gain self-awareness and the ability to build bridges with diverse audiences. The broad-based transfer curriculum includes interpersonal, intercultural, and group communication, public communication, argumentation and debate, and speech team activities.

The Journalism program seeks to prepare students to enter the workforce in journalism and its related fields (such as public relations and advertising) and to offer opportunities to students making a career switch or needing to meet the changing technological demands of the field.

A Communication Studies Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) from Skyline College is intended for students who are interested in transferring to a California State University (CSU) campus with a major in Communication Studies, or similar major.

Associate in Arts Degree The Berkeley City College AA in English Language/Writing serves students with diverse goals, including transfer and development of strong skills in creative and/or expository writing. This degree prepares students for transfer, leading to careers in education, law, business, and all fields in which analysis and communication are valued.

Research has shown that strong communication skills provide the necessary foundation needed to be successful in business, social, and personal relationships. According to the National Communication Association, “At its foundation, communication focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, and is the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry.”

The Communication Studies program prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to obtain a degree in Communication or a related Social Science field. The courses in the program also improve job attainment and performance skills, providing students with the training necessary for public speaking, customer service, conflict resolution, and interviewing. Students who complete the Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer will learn and practice cultural awareness, situation analyses, and goal-oriented solutions to practical problems, giving them valuable assets in their future relationships and workplaces. Lastly, this course of study improves students’ logic and reasoning skills, thus providing the foundation for understanding math and science, the world around them, and the skills and insights necessary to think through ethical issues and achieve their goals.

Begin with an Associate of Arts degree with a Direct Transfer Agreement into a Bachelor program in English or a related field. TCC offers the Associate of Arts (DTA) degree with a Literature Specialization. In this specialization, students choose courses from ancient to postmodern literature and from traditional to avant-garde readings.

The Associate in Arts for Transfer (ADT) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing these degrees(ADT) are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major.
