6 Film Studies Associate of Applied Science Programs

Upon successful completion of Associate in Science in Mt. San Antonio College’s Film, Television, and Electronic Media for Transfer degree requirements, the student will have demonstrated an understanding of coursework and foundational training in all stages of television and film production, including the historical, business and legal underpinnings of the industry; writing for the screen; visual and aural aesthetics; live and pre-recorded television and film production techniques; and post-production aesthetics and techniques.

The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Film and Media Production Program is designed for students who are passionate about visual communication through filmmaking and media arts and who have a strong desire to become fully involved in the film and media industry. The Film, Television, and Electronic Media major consists of courses appropriate for the Associate in Science in Film, Television, and Electronic Media for Transfer degree, which provides a foundational understanding of the discipline, a breadth of coursework in the discipline, and preparation for transfer to any CSU that accepts the Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC). The Associate in Science in Film, Television, and Electronic Media for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in Film, Television, and Electronic Media (or an approved similar major) at a CSU campus. Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept this degree will be required to complete no more than 60 (semester) units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. This degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. In all cases, students should consult with a counselor for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.

Film is a universally recognized medium that has a profound impact on how we view the world and ourselves. Filmmaking is the most collaborative of art forms. It demands the cooperation and dedication of screenwriter, cinematographer, producer, director and editor working together in a complex, creative enterprise. Film and Television explores the theory, criticism and production of motion pictures. The Film and Television Department at Santa Barbara City College offers a wide variety of courses designed for film majors and interested non-majors who wish to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of film as part of their undergraduate education. Students are exposed to a vast array of films from the classic to the contemporary, including both American and international works.

Film & Digital Media Arts @Northern provides students the opportunity to make films, write screenplays, do sound design and photography, and digital images for print, web, and video. Students gain hands-on experience in professional production environments learning teamwork and work ethic. Students explore television, narrative, and documentary filmmaking with an emphasis on personal expression.
