Curating is a creative, dynamic and diverse practice, constantly changing in relation to its context, to the work of artists and a range of cultural practitioners, and to the interests and expectations of audiences. When you join the Curating Contemporary Art MA (CCA) you join a well-established and highly influential programme and community of students actively contributing to how curating is understood, practised and thought about across the globe.

The MA in History and Theory of Art and Architecture (MSTAA) includes the study of the history of both architecture and art. It is a complete Master which aims at counteracting the growing marginalisation of architecture in art history studies. At the same time, the study of the history of art and architecture in different eras (medieval, modern and contemporary) is complemented by in-depth studies on the theory and criticism of architecture, artistic literature, the history and practice of restoration (with moments of practice in the field), museology and digital humanities with an eye towards other artistic and cultural expressions like photography, cinema, theatre, and literature. Practical workshops and internships in affiliated institutions complete the Master's training offer.

The MA in Aesthetics (Specialisation in Classics) enables you to engage in scholarship and research at Masters level within the sphere of aesthetics, philosophies and theories of art. The basic module provides both a chronological overview of the most important stages of philosophical thinking about art and an in-depth analysis of the main issues in contemporary philosophical discourse on art. The Classical Studies specialisation provides theoretical knowledge of the arts of antiquity and the early Middle Ages, as well as practical knowledge of how to deal with ancient art in contemporary culture.

Our Designer- Maker MA programme enables students to become open-minded professionals who are receptive to global trends and local challenges and can provide sustainable responses through material-oriented solutions. Students can learn to use their art to make an internationally relevant positive impact, whether by creating craft-produced limited-series items or autonomous works of art intended for exhibitions and the art market. Research assignments, design studies, and studio exercises provide opportunities to participate in national and international professional events, exhibitions, and competitions and facilitate career advancement after graduation.

Contemporary Art MA is a two-year international program for emerging contemporary artists of different backgrounds intended to guide them during the development of their artistic position.

Curatorial Studies in Art History is a one-year programme. We offer excellent students of the master's track in Art History an additional semester-long internship. Our programme aims to integrate early modern and modern and contemporary art, while also offering more period-specific courses. Our faculty includes the director of the Groninger Museum, Andreas Blühm, who teaches a course on the theory and practice of making exhibitions for all curatorial students.
