The Doctoral Program in Artistic Creation (PDCA) is a doctoral Program of the University of Aveiro (UA) in association with the Polytechnic Institutes of Leiria and Porto. This Doctoral Program (PD) promotes a transdisciplinary strategy for the development of experimental creative thinking, welcoming candidates with an interest in creative practices, namely in the areas of Visual Arts, Sound Arts, Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre and Music.

The study program in theory and critics of arts is realized within interdisciplinary context with focus on three areas: theory and history of architecture, musicology. Programme‘s doctoral students are encouraged to apply various theoretical models and methodological tools of humanities, social and technological sciences besides the classical methods of the critics of arts using both internal scientific resources of Kaunas University of Technology and those of their international partners. Graduates of various university studies are accepted to the doctoral programme with regard to their scientific experience within the selected topic.

Students are expected and encouraged to develop innovative ways of thinking and to experiment and create in a range of media. This programme also acts as an incubator for the development and realization of original artistic and professional productions, including design, interactive media, film, animation and new art forms.

PhD in Experimental Research through Design, Art and Technologies The PhD in Experimental Research Through Design, Art and Technologies programme aims to train a new generation of researchers capable of embracing the opportunities offered by the convergence of design, art, social sciences, humanities and technology, integrating complex knowledge to address multiple global challenges from a post-disciplinary perspective.

This four-year Ph.D. program meets the needs of students who want to pursue advanced studies and research in the History and Theory of Art, including the fields of art theory, art history, art criticism, and art management.

The Art Education didactics Ph.D. study program supports areas of fine arts and its theory connected with the social science of education and didactics in a comprehensive realm of inquiry-based and international scientific approach. The Ph.D. program should strengthen the knowledge of art education and art reflection in the specialization of Art education and Creative arts majors thus being focused on the Art class didactics. The research area of the program then the main focus is to implement the model of reflective art which is targeted towards creative and inquiry-based art production which consequently leads towards the creation of methodologies and frameworks for didactic and pedagogical transformations in the fine and creative arts. The aim of this four-year full-time (six-year part-time) research programme is the generation of a contribution to knowledge and understanding in Fine Art by means of an inquiry conducted through studio research and, where relevant, other research methods.

A candidate is required to produce a scholarly thesis, normally between 70 000 and 80 000 words, that contributes new knowledge and understanding to an aspect of the visual arts or an aspect of visual culture in a wider sense. The topic of study is identified by the candidate himself or herself, in consultation with an appointed supervisor, and is developed into a proposal that must be approved by the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture.

The purpose of the program is to enable candidates to undertake research at the most advanced academic level culminating in the submission, assessment, and acceptance of a thesis. The candidate is required to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution to the frontiers of art and/or design. In certain instances, creative work such as designed artifacts, public performances, public exhibitions, or other practice-based outputs may constitute the partial fulfillment of the research requirements.

The School provides expert supervision across the spectrum of art and writing practice, art and design history and theory, curating, and criticism. We welcome proposals for theoretical and practice-led projects, industrial collaborations, and technologically focused research.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest degree offered by the University of Otago. It is awarded on the submission of a thesis which must meet rigorous standards. It requires highly developed academic ability, independence and perseverance. Most students take between 3-4 years of full-time study to complete their PhD.

The Doctoral Program in History, Geography and History of Art, aims to complete the training needs of doctoral students, their methodological updating and initiation to research through the completion of the Doctoral Thesis.
