PhD in Experimental Research through Design, Art and Technologies The PhD in Experimental Research Through Design, Art and Technologies programme aims to train a new generation of researchers capable of embracing the opportunities offered by the convergence of design, art, social sciences, humanities and technology, integrating complex knowledge to address multiple global challenges from a post-disciplinary perspective.

The aim of this four-year full-time (six-year part-time) research programme is the generation of a contribution to knowledge and understanding in Fine Art by means of an inquiry conducted through studio research and, where relevant, other research methods.

A candidate is required to produce a scholarly thesis, normally between 70 000 and 80 000 words, that contributes new knowledge and understanding to an aspect of the visual arts or an aspect of visual culture in a wider sense. The topic of study is identified by the candidate himself or herself, in consultation with an appointed supervisor, and is developed into a proposal that must be approved by the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture.

The Doctoral Program in History, Geography and History of Art, aims to complete the training needs of doctoral students, their methodological updating and initiation to research through the completion of the Doctoral Thesis. Doctoral students are offered training that enables them to carry out basic and applied research.

The purpose of the program is to enable candidates to undertake research at the most advanced academic level culminating in the submission, assessment, and acceptance of a thesis. The candidate is required to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution to the frontiers of art and/or design. In certain instances, creative work such as designed artifacts, public performances, public exhibitions, or other practice-based outputs may constitute the partial fulfillment of the research requirements.

The School provides expert supervision across the spectrum of art and writing practice, art and design history and theory, curating, and criticism.
