The Master's program in Geographic Information Systems started in 2009 and is accredited by ARACIS. It takes place within the Department of Geography, a department with national tradition in this field, where Geoinformatics and Geographic Information Systems have been taught since 1992 and 1995 respectively. This extremely attractive master's line is not only addressed to geography graduates, but also to all those who aspire to a career in the field of GIS, including people active in fields that use geographic information. The master's students have an exceptional endowment: modern computing laboratories and state-of-the-art software. Teaching staff and researchers from the Department of Geography and the Department of Informatics of UVT are active in this master's degree, to which are added external collaborators from the Center for Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) of the University of Salzburg, Ecole polytechnique fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL), University of Bucharest and ESRI Romania. The courses within the curriculum, comprehensive and balanced at the same time, can be grouped as follows: courses that offer basic and advanced, conceptual, theoretical and practical notions of GIS and remote sensing; courses in the field of informatics (programming and database management systems); courses aimed at the use of advanced geospatial methods and technologies, such as object-oriented image analysis (OBIA) and courses aimed at the application of GIS in different geographic areas and geovisualization of spatial data.

The Geography program is one of two programs housed in the Department of Earth Science and Geography. Geography studies the spatial distribution of features across Earth’s landscape, such as the location of landforms, water bodies, and the organization of climate zones. It also considers the human landscape including how populations are distributed, why they migrate, and the ways they alter natural and urban environments. As a tool to advance these spatial analyses, the Geography program teaches the use of both traditional and computer-based geotechnical skills (geotechniques) such as cartography, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS).

Learn more about Geography degree programs
Studying geography provides a unique lens through which you can explore the relationship between people and their environments. This discipline integrates natural and social sciences, allowing you to analyze spatial patterns and processes that shape our world.
Through courses in physical geography, you'll examine landforms, climates, and ecosystems, while human geography focuses on cultural landscapes, urban studies, and population dynamics. You'll develop essential skills such as geographic information systems (GIS) mapping, spatial analysis, and remote sensing techniques. Many students build confidence as they engage with diverse perspectives and methodologies that showcase the complexity of global issues.
In addition to academic learning, geography programs often emphasize practical experience, including fieldwork and community projects. Graduates can pursue a range of careers, from urban planning and environmental consulting to cartography and international development. This combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on training prepares you for various opportunities in a world that increasingly values geographic literacy.
