The Geography program is one of two programs housed in the Department of Earth Science and Geography. Geography studies the spatial distribution of features across Earth’s landscape, such as the location of landforms, water bodies, and the organization of climate zones. It also considers the human landscape including how populations are distributed, why they migrate, and the ways they alter natural and urban environments. As a tool to advance these spatial analyses, the Geography program teaches the use of both traditional and computer-based geotechnical skills (geotechniques) such as cartography, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS).

Study Geography Abroad
Put simply, geography is the study of Earth: it’s landforms, oceans, people, and their environments. Comprised of many subfields, including human and physical geography, one of the primary goal for geologists is to understand Earth in all its complexities. What better way to study geography than to study geography abroad.
It’s a great way to combine your love for the world and all the natural beauty it has to offer with your passion for travelling. Not only will your geography degree take you to some of the world’s most unique places, you’ll also be exposed to new cultures, cities, and languages.
Explore the wilderness of South Africa or China to see how humans are attempting to coexist with the environment around them. At the same time, you can discover cosmopolitan life in some of the world’s most populous cities.
Studying geography abroad is also a great way to meet new, international friends with the same passions and interests as you. Plus, you can also expand your professional network by partaking in international internships or work experience.
Best Geography Degrees Abroad
The best geography schools exist around the world to offer students the opportunity to push their skills and their knowledge to the next level. Therefore, students leave not only with a geography degree but also the necessary experience to make a career out of their passions.
A typical day in the life of a geography student includes lectures and seminars covering a wide-range of topics including cartography, hydrology, or cultural geography, to name a few. Depending on your specialization, you may also spend time in the field working on research projects or collecting data. Outside of class, you will also need to study independently, keep up to date with current geography literature, and work on group projects.
If you pursue a geography degree abroad, you can also dedicate whatever free time you have to exploring your new hometown, learning the local language, or making friends.

Careers in Geography
The amount of job opportunities in the field of geography are nearly unlimited. There are researchers specializing in all the world’s environments and natural phenomena.
Consider some of the following careers that use a geography degree:
- Cartographer
- Conservation Officer
- Cultural Advisor
- Environmental Consultant
- Professor
- Research Assistant
There are no limits on where you can work in the world either! So, make your dreams come true and set your sights on a fulfilling, international career.
Prerequisites for a Degree in Geography
The best geography schools will often require that prospective students have demonstrated they have previously performed well in their classes, especially classes within history and the sciences. Both undergraduate and graduate students will have to provide a copy of their academic transcripts, along with any standardized test results.
International students will also have to prove their English proficiency, as many geography degrees are conducted entirely in English. If the program requires another language, you may also have to prove you have proficiency in a second language. An essay will also most likely be required to complete your application.
