The goal of the English as a Second Language (ESL) certificate program is to enhance the English-language proficiency of non-native speakers of English. Instruction is focused on reading, writing, speaking, and grammatical accuracy of English as applied in personal, vocational, or academic contexts.

The English Language for Academic Communication (ELAC) program prepares students for study in degree programs in an American university context. Through instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, students learn how to communicate their ideas effectively, interact using academic discourse, and apply their language skills to different situations and audiences for greater understanding and engagement. The ELAC program offers instruction at seven levels of proficiency: low beginner, beginner, elementary, low intermediate, intermediate, high intermediate, and advanced. Each level can be completed in one term of full-time study. Each level includes 140 academic hours of classroom instruction per level, per term. Each term is seven weeks long, and full-time students receive 20 hours of classroom instruction per week. The overall length of the program depends on the student’s initial placement and how quickly the student progresses from one level to the next.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized integrated-skills test, where the English proficiency of non-native speakers is evaluated. The goal of the TOEFL Prep program is to prepare students to succeed on the test. However, the program is also appropriate as a supplement to more general ESL courses.

The English as a Second Language Program offers classes to resident and international students who are learning English as a second or another language. SBCC credit ESL classes help students develop the language and academic skills necessary to help them meet their life, career, and academic goals. ESL classes are offered from beginning to advanced levels necessary to enter community college classes in English and take other college classes. The program helps students develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English and also offers classes that focus on specific skills that support learning such as grammar and editing, basic computer skills for writing, conversation practice, listening, speaking, and notetaking for academic courses, and English to enter specific career programs such as Early Childhood Education and Environmental Horticulture.

Easton Country Day School has developed a program for our enrolled high school students from overseas that focuses on both academics and cultural immersion. In addition to the core academic program, ECDS offers the opportunity to specialize in selected areas of enrichment that will help to deepen knowledge in specialty areas while simultaneously providing cultural immersion. Students will be placed with host families so that they are able to gain further exposure to the American cultural experience and English language.

Students who enter HTIC with limited English proficiency are enrolled in the College Preparatory Program. This five-level, integrated learning program emphasizes English as a Second Language (ESL) studies within the framework of liberal arts subject matter in a challenging, hands-on setting. Students who successfully complete the skills-based College Preparatory Program may apply to enter the Liberal Arts Program.
