Program description

Energy Management

The University of Wyoming MBA in Energy Management was designed by energy executives to develop future leaders in the energy industry. The highly applied curriculum prepares students to quickly advance in their energy careers. Seven integrated, energy-focused courses that range from energy economics and marketing to energy trading and project evaluation, are complemented by multidisciplinary team consulting projects. Company site visits and access to a broad network of energy industry executives are program differentiators.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master of Business Administration program generally requires:

  • Completed University of Wyoming Graduate Admissions Application. and non-refundable application fee. 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university or college.

  • A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0, preferred. Based on a 4.0 scale. If you do not meet this minimum preferred GPA, please contact the program office. 

  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examination) exam scores. GMAT and GRE scores must be sent directly to the MBA Program. The institution code for the GRE is 4855. 

  • Professional resume. Five or more years of professional work experience preferred, but not required.

  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework (post-secondary) must be sent directly from the issuing institution to the University of Wyoming Admissions Office at 1000. E. University Ave., Laramie, WY 82071-2000. Official University of Wyoming transcripts do not need requested to the department, but copies of all transcripts must also be uploaded into the UW Graduate Admissions Application.

  • Letters of recommendation (2). Professional or education-related letters of recommendation provided directly by the reference via the UW Graduate Admissions Application.

  • An interview may be requested upon completion of the application. On-campus interviews are preferred, but interviews can also be arranged via telephone or video conference. Please contact the program office for additional information atmba@uwyo.eduor 307-766-2449.

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

  • Provide proof of satisfactory English ability if native language is not English by completing the TOEFL or IELTS exam. The minimum acceptable TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score is 600 on the Paper-based test (TOEFL PBT) or a score of 100 on the Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT). The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7. An applicant whose native language is English and is a citizen of one of the following countries or has earned a university level degree from a school in one of the following countriesmay beexempt from providing additional proof of English proficiency: Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia Dominica, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Australia, Bermuda, Canada (all provinces except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. 

  • International students must also prove sufficient financial resources as established by the University of Wyoming (Graduate International Student Admissions).(campus programs only)

  • An applicant whose native language is English or who has earned a university level degree from an English speaking universitymay beexempt from providing proof of English proficiency. (online programs only)

Prerequisites: No prerequisite courses will be required if you have completed a business or STEM related bachelors or masters degree from a regionally accredited college or university with the minimum preferred GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale OR if you have 3+ years of professional work experience.

Applicants without a business or STEM related undergraduate or graduate degree OR without 3+ years of professional work experience must provide evidence of proficiency in the following:

  • Business Math and Statistics
  • Managerial Accounting
  • Fundamentals of Economics

*Evidence of proficiency in these areas is considered on a case-by-case basis but is commonly pursued through supplemental courses and/or relevant professional experience. Please contact the program office for additional information.

Program content

Energy Management MBA students will complete the MBA core curriculum, the summer experiential project, and the outdoor leadership experience before proceeding with courses specific to the energy management degree track. 

Core Curriculum

Students admitted to the Early Career MBA, Energy Management MBA, MBA in Finance, and any of the full-time dual degree programs will complete the following core curriculum courses:

  • Managerial Economics
  • Professional Development I & II
  • Decision Making I & II
  • Entrepreneurial Management
  • Decision Modeling
  • Operations Management
  • Marketing Management
  • Managerial Accounting
  • Summer Project 
  • Sustainable Management Strategy (capstone)

Energy Management MBA (21 months)

Students will be well versed in macro energy economics and terminology.  They will gain a solid contextual understanding of energy businesses across industry segments, including: 

  1. Energy Supply Chain Management

  2. Energy Finance (Project Evaluation)

  3. Energy Economics

  4. Energy Accounting

  5. Energy Law and Regulatory

  6. Energy Marketing & Sustainable Consumption

  7. Energy Finance (Energy Trading, Hedging, and Securities)

Students spend their first year (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters) in the MBA program completing the core curriculum, the summer experiential project in the energy field, and the outdoor leadership experience.  The second year is spent taking energy management courses and the MBA Capstone Course during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Energy Management MBA students must meet the same admission requirements as the General MBA students.
