The study program is designed as a six-year program without an interstage bachelor's degree. This type of study has always been one of the fundamental study programs at universities since the Middle Ages. The core, obligatory subjects taught in the first years of study will help students to recognize and become familiar with the normal physiological processes in a living organism. The third-year subjects introduce the pathological processes and, in addition, help students to acquire and master basic practical skills within the propaedeutic of inner medicine and the basics of surgery. The subjects taught in the fourth and fifth years are focused on individual fields of clinical medicine. Finally, the subjects in the sixth study year are introduced and taught mainly as long-term practical training in the departments of internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, the maternity ward, and pediatrics. Additionally, the students also have similar practical training within subjects covering preventive, social, and public health medicine. Our goal is to provide students with the necessary theoretical background and enable them in particular clinical fields to master the diagnosis of conditions and provision of the most suitable treatments to a patient. Furthermore, the students also master an appropriate approach to patients. It is necessary to attain a reasonable balance between the amount of new information from individual medical fields and basic core knowledge so that in the particularities we do not lose focus on the whole: an ill person, a patient.

PHSU is proud to offer a Doctor of Medicine degree program at our new School of Medicine in Tortola, BVI. The program is preliminarily accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) and is seeking applications for its Fall 2026 start.

The Dentistry (English) Program has a learning process, along with theoretical teaching, that is focused on developing practical skills. The student performs practically all the manipulations on the phantom that are provided by the program. This method of teaching is safe.

The standard duration of study is six years. The form of study is full-time only. Graduates of the programme receive a complete medical education and are awarded the title MUDr. (M.D.) after successful completion of studies, entitling them to apply for positions in all M.D. specialization fields. Since the academic year 1996/97, tuition takes place adhering to a modernized and revised study programme that allows students to gain integrated knowledge in theoretical and preclinical fields. Common clinical problems are explained using problem-oriented learning and clinical training focuses not only on the application of theoretical knowledge but also on developing practical skills. Tuition goals are in accordance with the European Program for Medical Faculties Euroskills, which the Third Faculty of Medicine is taking part in. Study at the Third Faculty of Medicine is compatible with study at other medical faculties.

General medicine is an undergraduate program taught in the English language. The study of General Medicine lasts for 6 years (12 semesters) and graduates are awarded degrees: Doctor of General Medicine (MUDr.).

Dental medicine is a second undergraduate study program offered for international students. It lasts 5 years (from academic year 2025/2026) and graduates are awarded degrees: Doctor of Dental Medicine. Stress is put on the practical skills of students, so they can perform basic stomatology procedures on their own after graduation.

The PhD Program in Psychology at the University of Aveiro aims to prepare highly qualified students for autonomous research work in the various fields of application of Psychology (education, organizations, forensic, health, etc.), thus addressing the recruitment needs of academia, public institutions, associations and non-profit organizations, and the business sector. Taking into account the legal requirements to obtain a PhD degree (Decree-Law no. 74/2006 of March 24), the general goals of the Doctoral Program in Psychology are the following:

The Doctoral Program in Gerontology and Geriatrics (PDGG) aims to respond to the increasing need of advanced training in gerontology and geriatrics. Its major goal is to provide specialized training on direct intervention, policy definitions, service planning and research with older adults, involving the collaboration of national and international specialists. The PDGG is taught in association with the University of Porto, namely with the Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Sciences Nutrition, the Faculty of Sports, and the Faculty of Humanities. It is therefore a conjoint degree awarded by both institutions – University of Aveiro (UA) and University of Porto (UP).

The Doctoral Program in Rehabilitation Sciences (PDCR) has as major aim to prepare students with advanced and integrative training in Rehabilitation, and place the student at the forefront of Health Sciences (HS) research. The training offered is oriented towards the current requirements in health-related fields, including Precision Medicine, and to technologically advanced domains. We expect to develop innovative conceptual and methodological tools that response to HS societal challenges. The PDCR also capacitates students to communicate and transfer scientific knowledge and expertise between the academia and healthcare institutions, to invigorate the Health sector. In order to do so, the PDCR has a group of core common courses that provide competences in HS research, a group of specialized ones on advanced formation on Rehabilitation; and a set of optional curricular units that enables the student to develop a curricular path more adapted to its interests. The PDCR lecturing languages are Portuguese and English.

The graduating dentist reveals broad academic dental education and has to be able to realize proper clinical dental practice. He/she is sufficiently trained in clinical practice and has relevant manual skills. He/she is able to work together with other dental and health care professionals in the health care system. He/she has to be able to communicate adequately. He/she is prepared for adequate continual self-education and professional development. He/she is able to practice evidence-based dentistry using extensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen offers courses in General Medicine (six years) in both Czech and in English languages. For medical students, the first two years of study are devoted to theoretical disciplines, such as Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, and Physiology. During the third and fourth years, pre-clinical subjects, such as Pathological Anatomy, Pathological Physiology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Pharmacology are studied. Bedside teaching is also introduced in the third year. The last two years of study are fully devoted to clinical subjects. For students of Dentistry, the first two years of study are devoted to theoretical disciplines and pre-clinical Dentistry, the third, fourth, and fifth years are devoted to clinical stomatology. The academic years for theoretical disciplines and pre-clinical subjects are organized into winter and summer semesters. Each semester consists of a teaching period followed by an examination period. The clinical courses are organized in a block system.

Our program is designed as an integrated, system-based, spiral curriculum, which is divided into two phases. There is both horizontal and vertical integration such that as the student progresses through the phases, they revisit the same organ systems at higher levels of complexity and clinical content until graduation.

The first two years serve as the foundation of basic medical knowledge. From the third year theoretical training is extended with regular clinical practice, where students intensively take part in the work of the clinical departments and the teaching hospitals.

The degree program Medicine aims at educating Medical doctors, student graduates in Master in Health Sciences and gets medical doctor qualification.
