Program description

Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering)

This program of study is provided for students who intend to embark on a career in the maritime industry as Marine Engineer Officers on commercial vessels. It provides the knowledge and skills required to safely manage, facilitate, and undertake operation and maintenance linked to the shipboard marine engineering systems. Course content includes marine engineering and systems, vessel structure and operations, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation, marine survey and shipboard safety. The program is designed to integrate with professional short courses and training at sea so that successful students will not only obtain an Advanced Diploma or bachelor degree but also an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Certificate of Competency. The program is fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 2010 as amended. (The amendment took place in Manila in 2010)

International applicants will be required to provide evidence of their English language ability.

For those applicants who are nationals of and currently residing in a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last two years must be provided.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate broad knowledge of marine engineering by:

  • Applying a diverse array of scientific concepts to safely operate and maintain the main propulsion system in a commercial ship.
  • Determining the appropriate role of auxiliary and shipboard systems in multiple contexts to ensure the safe operation of a commercial ship.

Solve marine engineering related problems by:

  • Interpreting a range of available data sources in standard- operational and emergency related scenarios on a commercial ship.
  • Organising regulatory appropriate responses which enable the continued safe operation of a commercial ship.

Practice effective leadership in marine engineering by:

  • Identifying how various management theories can be applied in common marine engineering roles.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of communication, collaboration and decision making strategies which enable safe operation of a commercial ship.

Demonstrate personal and professional stewardship through:

  • Make use of regulatory frameworks relevant to marine engineering in the international shipping industry.
  • Performing all tasks in an ethical manner where the safety of persons and protection of the natural environment are of the greatest importance.

Career opportunities

The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) is the recognised pathway to becoming an AMSA certified marine engineering officer. This degree provides additional knowledge and skills that will be of benefit to students seeking a career at sea. The degree will also equip professional engineering officers with the additional knowledge and skills that they are likely to require to take up senior shore-based professional positions such as:

  • Governmental or intergovernmental regulators and organisations such as AMSA, EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency), IMO (International Maritime Organization)
  • Senior position in a shipyard

  • Marine superintendent or safety manager in a shipping company
  • Product, R&D, sales and service managers in companies manufacturing marine engines and equipment.
  • Surveyor in a Classification Society

  • Maritime Education and Training, research and teaching positions
