Description of Advanced English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
The Advanced English for Academic Purposes course is 10 weeks long and aims to prepare students with an already advanced level of English (5.5 IELTS or equivalent) for degree-level studies.
Its primary focus is on study skills, reading for gist, writing essays and an academic term paper, listening to lectures, note-making, giving presentations and taking part in seminars. In addition, it provides a thorough introduction to the subject students wish to go on to study with the help of lectures by subject specialists and reinforcement work by EFL staff.
Applicants may be required to study this course if their English language level falls slightly below the entry requirement for their chosen degree. Successful completion of this course will then allow students to progress onto their undergraduate studies.
class sizes are small with a maximum of 12 per class to ensure that each student receives a high degree of attention and support.
On the Advanced English for Academic Purposes course students will study the following subjects each week:
- Reading and writing skills: project writing
- Speaking and listening skills: note-taking from lectures
- Grammar and Vocabulary
- English for Specific Purposes (Business, Law or International Studies)
Students wishing to study the Advanced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course must meet the following criteria:
- English Language: IELTS of 5.5 or equivalent
