Master's Program in Resource Recovery – Biotechnology and Bioeconomy

How can we produce sufficient amounts of sustainable food, animal feed, materials, and energy for the world? How can biotechnology help us to contribute to a sustainable society and create jobs and business opportunities? How can you contribute to a more sustainable world?

This unique Master's program is for those who want to take on the challenge of the problems posed by the huge amounts of waste generated by human activity. The program is for those who want to learn more about green solutions for waste management and how it is possible to convert waste and by-products into sustainable products. If you like biology and biotechnology and want to apply this into practice in industry and trade, this is the program for you.

Admission requirements

  • Degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science in Engineering with major in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Business Economics, Energy Technology, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Textile Engineering or Structural Engineering OR Bachelor's degree in physics or chemistry
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to :
    • IELTS (academic training), 6.5 (with no part of the test below 5.5) OR
    • TOEFL (Internet based): 90 (with a minimum of 20 on the written part) OR
    • TOEFL (paper based): 575 (with a minimum of 4.5 on the written part)

Program content

In this Master's program, you will develop advanced and unique skills in solving problems related to the transport, processing, and transformation of by-products into useful products using biological methods. You will also learn how to develop related processes and understand business enterprises.

The first term provides an overview of the status and of future trends in the field. Business and methodological knowledge such as life cycle analysis are also included. The second term focuses on biotechnology, bio economy, and bioprocesses. Thereafter the program challenges you with a one-year degree project giving you the opportunity to immerse further in the subject which interests you the most. The degree project can be carried out within the industry or in collaboration with our researchers and PhD students at the Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery at the University of Borås.

  • 240000 SEK full tuition fee
  • EU / EEA citizens and exchange students are not required to pay fees
