Master Program of Fine Arts in Fashion and Textile Design
Want to educate yourself in fashion and textile design? Are you looking for an education that encourages an experimental and exploratory approach? Then the Master’s Program in Fashion and Textile Design might be the education for you. In the school’s laboratories, you get the opportunity to test many of your design ideas.
The laboratories at the Swedish School of Textiles are well-equipped and staffed by highly skilled people with extensive experience in textile production. Here, the students work as independently as possible, and during the first semester of the program optional introductory courses are given on how to handle the equipment.
The first half of the last year is devoted to a degree project, and after that there are three choices for the rest of the school year: further develop the degree project, take a preparatory research course, or internship.
Since the Borås region is a textile region, there are good opportunities to collaborations and internships at nearby companies, but many students seek out internships at companies and fashion houses around Europe.
The entire program is based on research, and the students gain insights in current research in the field. Several of the lectures and workshops included in the program are held by researchers and doctoral students associated with the Swedish School of Textiles. Through their projects and analyses, the students learn to relate to current research and what may develop the field.
The Master’s program in Textile and Fashion Design has two specialisations:
- Textile design
- Fashion design
The Swedish School of Textiles
The Swedish School of Textiles is a place for creativity, knowledge, and innovation. We have courses spanning all textile areas, ranging from textile design and fashion, to production and value chains, to business and textile technology. We have a unique machine park where creativity and theory are combined with practical work.
The Swedish School of Textiles is the only university in Sweden with a specialisation in textiles and fashion that has rights to grant degrees at all levels, including a doctoral degree in artistic work. For those who already have an undergraduate education, you can further specialise through one of our educational programmes at the Master’s level, or develop your skills through one of our popular freestanding courses.
Special eligibility to the program requires an undergraduate degree in design consisting of 180 credits or the equivalent and the ability to conduct experimental investigative work and critical reflection. Furthermore, knowledge of English equivalent to English 6 is required.
In the portfolio, the applicant's skills and abilities in the field of design should be clear and the application projects should provide a description of what the applicant wants to focus on during the Master's program within the framework of the program project courses.
Assessment of eligibility and selection is made on artistic grounds and is based on the work samples in the portfolio, application projects, and interview. The first step is an assessment of the portfolio with respect to shown artistic creative ability, ability when it comes to experimental work, technical skill, and reflective ability. In the next step, some candidates are interviewed. Thereafter, a final assessment of eligibility and a ranking of applicants is conducted before acceptance.
