Program description

The Doctor of Laws is a higher doctorate degree, ranking above the PhD. This prestigious degree is awarded to established scholars who have produced original, substantial and distinguished contribution to advancement of the study of law.

Almost invariably this is a published work, i.e. a book or an article in an international journal, and establishes the author as an international authority in a particular field of law.

The level of attainment required for a higher doctorate is higher than that required for the PhD degree and its award carries great prestige within the University and New Zealand legal community.

If you've got at least 10 years of post LLB experience in an area of law as a practitioner and/or an academic, then this doctorate degree may suit you.

Waikato Faculty of Law welcomes enquiries from potential candidate with backgrounds in:

  • Academic teaching and research in law
  • Research in law in the public or private sector
  • Private legal practice as barrister and solicitor
  • Legal practice in public sector agencies or in private sector companies
  • Business management
  • Policy analysis in central government and local government
  • The diplomatic service
  • Community agencies
  • Consultancy
  • Accountancy firms
