About this program

Motive Power Technician

Motive power technicians will learn to test and analyze systems and vehicles in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and specifications. Students will learn to diagnose, disassemble, analyze, and properly reassemble major automotive systems and components. Students will get hands-on experience in a wide range of vehicle types from multiple manufacturers. This program will appeal to students with a good mechanical aptitude.

Admission requirements

OSSD with the majority of courses at the College (C), University (U), University/College (M) or Open (O) level plus:

  • Grade 12 Math (C) or (U)
  • Senior Level Physics (C) or (U) is recommended

Other regions (English proficiency test required)

  • High school diploma/graduation certificate and transcript or equivalent in original language and English translation.
  • English proficiency requirement:
    • TOEFL iBT 78 with no band lower than 20, or PBT score of 550, or CBT score of 213 / IELTS 6.0 with no band lower than 5.5, Duolingo score of 100.

Qualification

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Analyze, diagnose, and solve various motive power system problems by using problem-solving and critical thinking skills and strategies and by applying fundamental knowledge of motor vehicle operation, components, and their interrelationships.
  2. Diagnose and repair climate control systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
  3. Diagnose and repair engine systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
  4. Diagnose and repair electrical, electronic, personal safety, and emission components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
  5. Diagnose and repair drive train components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
  6. Diagnose and repair suspension, steering, and brake components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
  7. Disassemble and assemble components to required specifications by applying workshop skills and knowledge of basic shop practices.
  8. Select and use a variety of troubleshooting techniques and test equipment to assess electronic circuits, vehicle systems, and subsystems.
  9. Apply knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics to the testing and analysis of motive power systems and subsystems.
  10. Communicate information effectively, credibly, and accurately by producing supporting documentation to appropriate standards.

Career paths

A wide range of opportunities exists for motive power technicians in the area of automotive service and counter sales. Motive Power Technicians are excellent candidates for many automotive service technician, truck and coach and heavy-duty technician apprenticeship positions.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can present their college diploma to their employer and the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills.
