Program description


The master's degree program in Physics is divided into four tracks/curricula. The Particle and Astroparticle Physics track , delivered in English, aims to provide a solid control of subnuclear physics, focusing mainly on experimental aspects. The Condensed Matter Physics track, delivered in English, aims instead to provide an in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and experimental aspects of condensed matter. The Biophysics track (delivered in English) focuses on biophysics, both from a computational and an experimental point of view. The General Theoretical Physics track, on the other hand, allows the student to study theoretical topics in the field of gravitation (courses delivered only in Italian), elementary particles (partly delivered in English, partly in Italian), statistical mechanics, and complex systems.

Admission requirements

The student should have a BSc in Physics or in a similar subject.

The student is required to have a basic knowledge of Classical Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Optics, Quantum Mechanics and Statistical Mechanics. He should have laboratory experience and knowledge of the methods of data analysis for physical sciences. Moreover, he should have some knowledge computer programming and of the most important numerical methods used in Physics.

Students should present a CV, a motivational letter in which they clearly state which track they would like to enroll in (Particle and Astroparticle Physics; Condensed Matter Physics; Biophysics; General Theory). Before admission, the Selection Committee may require a skype conversation, with the purpose of verifying the knowledge of the topics reported in the Syllabus mentioned above. Students may also include a GRE certificate.

Minumum GPA: 75/100

Minimum English Language Requirements: Upper Intermediate (CEFR Level B2) The following test scores are accepted:

  • IELTS Academic 6.0 or higher
  • TOEFL IbT 80 or higher
  • Cambridge B2 First or higher
  • TOEIC Listening&Reading 720 or higher

Please note: the above requirements may be waived for students holding a degree from an accredited institution where English is the principle language of instruction.

Learning Outcomes

In particular, masters graduates in Physics have achieved the following learning outcomes:

  • a mastery of the scientific research method, based on a sound background in classical and modern physics and the necessary expertise in the use of mathematical methodologies and IT tools;
  • in-depth knowledge of the field of modern physics corresponding to the curriculum of choice;
  • advanced skills in modern instrumentation and experimental techniques, in the data collection and analysis procedures as well as in model building. The attainment of such requirements enables masters graduates to work in full autonomy and to be responsible for projects as well as for scientific and technological structures at national and international level;
  • knowledge of specific scientific and technical terminology.
  • To achieve such outcomes, the curriculum provides for the completion of the basic education thanks to courses of Theoretical physics, Mathematical physics and experimental laboratories, shared with various curricula, followed by a specialist in-depth study of subjects relating to the curriculum of choice, taught in Italian or in English, better detailed in the University programs Manifesto. The first year includes most of the shared courses, whereas the second year mainly focuses on optional courses and thesis work. The curricula are strictly linked to the scientific research activity carried out in the Department, covering nearly all the fields of fundamental and applied physics and of the related sciences.

Continuing studies

Thanks to their methodological background, their operational resilience, the range of knowledge acquired and their mastery of technical and scientific English, masters graduates may go on with their studies in PhD schools, 2nd level professional masters and various postgraduate schools. Masters graduates who have acquired the ECTS provided for by the regulations in force may be admitted to tests to participate in training courses for teachers of lower and upper secondary schools.

Career opportunities

Masters graduates may hold technical and managerial roles in Civil Service, in a wide range of professional fields requiring specialist skills in natural and artificial systems and in general in all public and private high-tech companies. Masters graduates may have career opportunities especially in the electronics, space, telecommunications, semiconductor and energy industry, where they may work for companies operating in product quality assurance, environmental monitoring and assessment and IT fields.
