ME/MS Sustainable Engineering

The multidisciplinary ME/MS Sustainable Engineering program is designed to give its students a clear understanding of the role and impacts of various aspects of engineering on environmental, societal, and economic problems. It focuses on issues in areas of sustainability such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, deforestation, pollution, ethical issues, fair trade and gender equity.
Run by the industrial and systems engineering department and offered on campus, both as full- or part-time options, the Master of Science program places particular emphasis on the potential trade-offs between environmental, social, and economic objectives.
Through the duration of the MS Sustainable Engineering program you will gain a strong ability to apply engineering and decision-making tools and methodologies to sustainability-related problems, as well as a capacity to distinguish professional and ethical responsibilities associated with the practice of engineering.
You will complete five required core courses and select two graduation engineering electives in areas such as:
- Product design and development
- Energy
- Transportation and logistics
- Modeling, manufacturing and materials
You will also choose one elective each from below groups:
Environmental Technology:
- Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
- Air Emissions
- Industrial Water Management
- Product Stewardship
- Resource Reducation
Social Context:
- Managing for Environmental Sustainability
- Technical Innovation and Public Policy
- Energy Policy
