PhD Materials Sciences and Technologies

Seminar series in materials sciences given by invited speakers from various areas of material sciences

Admission requirements

Applicants for the PhD degree program must hold an MSc or MPhil, or equivalent degree issued by an academic institution and must possess an overall understanding of a high competence in their field of knowledge and also be familiar with cognitive disciplines. They must be capable of using various research techniques. Admission requirements include excellent grades, an MSc degree (or equivalent), a final project, and/or the achievement of good initial results in research. Applicants still in process of working on their Master's degree projects may be admitted conditionally.

In case of applicants who have devoted time to a scientific or engineering practice, their achievements during this period will be considered in addition to their graduation results. In addition to professional achievements, applicants should clearly demonstrate a sense of responsibility for the advancement of scientific knowledge.

Certification of English Language Proficiency

The English language proficiency requirement can be waived in case of previous studies completed fully in English with qualification documents (i.e. high school diploma or undergraduate degree in case of applications to graduate programs) issued originally in English.

Basic courses in materials sciences

  • General studies on materials (Physical chemistry of surfaces; Porous materials; Colloid chemistry and nanotechnology; Radiation chemistry; Chemistry of dyes; Chemistry of solid materials)
  • Methods of materials testing (Spectrometry and microscopy; Advanced separation methods; Advanced mass spectrometry; Test methods for microelectronic materials and structures; Colours and colour measurement etc.)

Courses in specific areas of materials sciences

  • Polymer materials and technologies (Polymer chemistry and physics; Natural and natural based polymers; Modification of cellulosic materials; Synthetic fibres and technical textiles; Fibres for paper industry; Anatomy and physics of wood and paper forming fibres; Photodegradation of wood and paper forming fibres; Interaction of printing materials with printed surfaces; Application of high energy irradiation for modification of natural polymers and plastics; Characterization of functional textiles and garments; Antimicrobial textiles; Polymers in micro technology etc.)
  • Ceramic materials and technologies (Structure and rupture mechanism of ceramics; Mechanical properties of technical ceramics etc.)
  • Metallic materials and technologies (Models for thermally activated transformation in alloys etc.)
  • Micro‐ and nano‐structured materials and technologies (Semiconductors; Band gap engineering – efficiency of solar cells; Self organizing low dimensional systems; Microcapsules in advanced technologies; Application of polymers in microtechnology; Elements and compounds in micro size gas sensors etc.)
  • Composites
  • Environmental issues of materials sciences technologies (Green printing technologies), reuse of plastic waste).

Research areas

  • The research in polymer chemistry and technology concentrates on the various forms of cellulose (cotton, hemp, wood) which is the most commonly available renewable material in the nature, on understanding the properties of the cellulose products, and on the modifications of the cellulose for various purposes and functions up to changing its fibrous character to gels. The research area also includes technical and innovative synthetic materials and degradation of plastics.
  • Technical ceramics and the various fibre (glass, metal, synthetic, carbon) reinforced composites are more and more widely applied. The study of their macro- and microstructures helps to optimize their properties according to the needs of the application areas.
  • Some properties of metals and advanced alloys are studied for special applications.
  • The micro- and nano-technologies are the results of the most recent technological developments, leading to break-through results in several areas. Within this area the Doctoral School concentrates on the properties of metallic and semiconductor-based systems. Self-cleaning surfaces are interesting for various industrial areas. Functional textiles, containing special materials, in particular micro-capsulated ones, belong to the most up to date areas of development. Basic researches in metal-organic structures and in fullerenes contribute to composite technologies.
  • A serious task of the applications of the technologies is to avoid environmental pollution or to neutralize their pollution effects. Important roles are played by the identification of the pollutants and the degradation of the large non-biodegradable molecules to small and biodegradable ones.
