This programme is a significant part of the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) training requirements for students to gain the internationally recognised Standards of Training and Certification of Watch keepers (STCW) Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch Class 3 certificate of competency or Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework Class 4 certificate of competency.
STCW Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch Class 3 certificate of competency
Provides the domestic and international maritime industry, with marine engineers who are able to work in an engineering capacity as Engineer Officer of the Watch on merchant navy vessels.
MNZ Seafarer Certification and Operation Limits Framework Class 4 certificate of competency
Provides the domestic maritime industry, with marine engineers who are able to work in an engineering capacity as Chief Engineer.
Blended delivery (online and in person)
A flexible learning approach gives you the option of completing components of the courses online, minimising time away from your job, while taking advantage of your workplace situation to enhance the relevance of your learning.
The blended delivery of the programme will also contribute to your employability by enhancing your core transferable skills; particularly digital literacy, problem solving, communication skills and team work.
This Diploma will enable you to pathway into the Level 7 degree courses leading to Marine Engineering Officer Qualifications.
Length: Duration will vary depending on your sea-time and any prior qualifications you may have. The programme includes a 30 - 36 weeks full time block course here in Nelson.
There are no minimum academic requirements for entry.
Training record book
There is no arranged work-based training within this programme.
However students must have completed their Marine Engineering Training Record Book (TAR book) prior to attend the block course. This TAR book is presented to the Maritime New Zealand Examiner prior to the final Oral Examination.
English Language Requirements
All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 (with no band lower than 5.5), issued within the last two years, or equivalent.
TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 20)
University of Cambridge English Examinations - FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill
Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 50
City & Guilds IESOL - B2 Communicator with a score of 66
Prior to attending the FFT511 and SSC511 courses, applicants must provide: a medical certificate or other acceptable medical certificate, not more than two years old at the time of attending the FFT511 Advanced Fire Fighting Course, and the SSC511 Proficiency in Survival Craft course.
