Program description

Introduction to Project Management

More than a skill, an aid to thinking tool that you can apply to your professional, academic and personal life.

Project Management is increasingly becoming popular among organizations to achieve their goals. Today, projects have a wider, global scope, involve partners across the world, from other societal sectors, and require a collaborative attitude in order to achieve their objectives. Nowadays, project managers are expected to have a broad understanding of project design and management related issues. They need to have a basic understanding of the criteria for initiating, planning, implementing and closing effective projects, and be multi-skilled in order to effectively tackle the challenges projects are bringing in complex environments.

Through this online program you will get introduced to the relevant approaches, theories, and methodologies for project management in an international context.

Admission requirements

This online program is designed for professionals involved in the design and management of private and public funded projects in profit and non-profit organisations developed in international context and involving multi-cultural teams.

Applicants should have the ability to function academically and professionally at Bachelor level. Because it is an interactive program, candidates should have an adequate level of spoken and written English to be able to follow the program and to actively participate.

Session 1 - Introduction to Logic Models

Project is a logic model that coherently articulates three logics inside:

  • a qualitative statement
  • a quantification strategy
  • and external elements that can affect both

In this first session you will be refreshed on the basics of project management and you will be introduced to main elements of the stakeholders theory.

Objectives

  • Understand the main structural elements in a project and how they interact as part of logic model. Understand the project’s life cycle and its different stages.
  • Get familiar with the main stages of the project life cycle and the corresponding decision making processes.
  • Understand the importance of stakeholders analysis in project design and how to assess the main behavioural patterns.
  • Gain knowledge of the techniques used for the context analysis leading to the identification of needs and opportunities.

Session 2 - Analytical and Planning Tools

Once you have made sense of the critical importance of knowing and analyzing the project stakeholders, you will be introduced to the analytical and planning tools required to analyze the problems and needs of beneficiaries and target groups. Furthermore, you will design and plan a response strategy to anticipate potential risks that can undermine it.

Objectives

  • Get familiar with the planning techniques required to formulate a project to tackle the opportunities and needs.
  • Understand the main steps of budget preparation.
  • Get familiar with the different categories of assumptions.
  • Understand the risk assessment strategies and the definition of mitigation measures.

Session 3 - Monitoring Tools

In the final session, you will complete the project logical model by designing a strategy to quantify the change the project is expected to produce. You will combine the three logics in a framework through which managers can steer their projects and decision makers have access to the critical monitoring data.

Objectives
