Early Childhood Studies FdA (Full-time)

Why study this course?

The Early Childhood Studies FdA course combines practical and college-based learning, helping you to develop expert skills and knowledge in all aspects of working with young children.

Touching on academic theory that includes psychology, sociology and education, you'll also receive advice and guidance from a mentor during practical work experience.

With this combination of theory and professional practice, you can be assured that the foundation degree is focused on teaching you the skills employers demand.

This foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies has been developed to meet the needs of qualified early years practitioners working with children and families across all fields of the early years sector, including play, care, health and education.

Both local and international perspectives on early childhood will inform your studies. The course teachers will draw on disciplines including psychology, sociology, social policy, education and health, while specific topics covered will include children’s rights, pedagogical and curriculum approaches, diversity and inclusion.

Admission requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have:

  • At least one A level (or a minimum of 32 UCAS points in an equivalent Level 3 qualification in Early Years/Child Care and Education, including an NVQ or BTEC National Diploma/CACHE Diploma in Child Care or a recognised Access to Higher Education Certificate in a related subject
  • Two GCSEs at C (grade 4) or above in English and Maths or equivalent qualification to be agreed in consultation with the University Academic Liaison Tutor (ALT) before acceptance
  • One year of full-time experience working with children in an Early Years nursery or school setting
  • Current clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to work with children
  • Two satisfactory references

You can undertake a variety of career paths on completion of the course, including leading management of children’s centres, nursery and primary schools and other early childhood care and education settings.

Some of our past students have gone on to specialise in a particular area, such as special educational needs, while others have taken up strategic management posts in local authorities and government departments.

A high number of former students continue their professional studies and progress on to the Early Childhood Studies BA, various master's degrees or our one of our teacher training courses.
