Program description

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too.

If you have a passion for literature and interest in how people learn then Education and English Literature offers you the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of the fascinating relationship between language, the ways our brains work and the expression of those links.

If you choose this combination, you will study educational topics such as the nature of learning, childhood development, as well as the history of education and changes to educational policies. You will explore the effect of class, race and gender on educational success. You will develop an open-minded and enquiring approach to the study of
literature, looking at a range of genres, authors, and national traditions while developing critical and analytical skills. You can choose creative writing options that will help you take an imaginative approach to both Education and English.

You can also direct your studies to further combine these subjects, such as taking a teaching placement or developing a final-year project on literature and education. Expert tutors will give you an excellent grounding in these subjects and help you to develop approaches to education and to literature that you are passionate about.

Keele’s Education and English Literature degree is superb preparation for teaching English at any level, but the skills you will develop prepare you for a broad range of careers, including local and central government, social services, and writing careers such as journalism. The degree will help you to work analytically but also creatively, to deal with real-world situations as well as to reflect critically. It will set you up for further professional study, enabling you to qualify as a teacher, lecturer, or social worker, or to work in the legal profession, for example.
