A Master's in Public Health Sciences from Karolinska Institutet (KI) provides a global perspective to the public health field. Public health science promotes health and quality of life, helps prevent disease, and strengthens health systems. Students can choose between two different programmes to receive the same Master's in Public Health Sciences degree.

Public Health Epidemiology

This first option under the Public Health Sciences degree provides advanced studies in epidemiology and its application within the public health sector. Students gain an understanding of epidemiological and statistical methods, data acquisition and management, and methods for outcome assessment of public health interventions and policy. The focus is on applied epidemiology so that students are able to describe, analyse, and reflect upon a variety of public health issues.

Health Economics, Policy, and Management

This second option under the Public Health Sciences degree provides an opportunity for students to develop theoretical and practical skills for analysing health and healthcare issues at the organisational and policy level. The goal is to give students health economics, management, and policy skills that are related to the health sector.

Admission requirements

General admission requirements for a Master's in Public Health Sciences from Karolinska Institutet:

  • Proficiency in the English language should be documented by an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL; level of knowledge must be equivalent to English B at Swedish upper secondary school

Tuition fees

Tuition fees for a Master's in Public Health Sciences at Karolinska Institutet:

  • Citizens within the EU/EEA, or Switzerland: No application or tuition fees
  • Non EU/EEA citizens: Application fee is 900 SEK; tuition is 180 000 SEK total


Limited scholarships are available at Karolinska Institutet for international fee-paying students. The scholarships can only be applied for once per year.

Students who successfully complete the Public Health Epidemiology programme or the Health Economics, Policy, and Management programme will graduate with a Master of Science in Public Health Sciences (120 credits) from Karolinska Institutet.
