Bachelor's Degree in Modern and Contemporary History (in Portuguese only)
Adapted to the Bologna model, the Undergraduate course in Modern and Contemporary History in the History Department of Iscte presents an innovative curriculum within the field of history courses taught in Portugal.
In fact, History at Iscte is another story! Why?
- The degree mostly focuses on modern and contemporary history, the most recent history, which helps to understand the world and the present.
- The degree combines in fair proportion the history of Portugal, the history of Europe and the history of the World, paying broad attention to the diversity of cultures, civilizations and peoples.
- The degree includes training in the generic skills of various disciplines (quantitative methods, information and communication technologies), useful for any professional activity.
- The degree includes a strong interdisciplinary component that allows students to deepen and diversify existing scientific knowledge in other areas at Iscte.
- In addition to giving a solid background in the Historical Sciences, the degree allows students to deepen their knowledge in various areas (Cultural Studies, Social and Economic Sciences, International Relations).
- The degree allows the internationalization of knowledge - the History Department regularly organizes lectures, conferences, seminars and events with the participation of foreign professors.
- In collaboration with the Center for Research and Studies of Sociology (CIES-Iscte), the degree promotes the inclusion of students in research initiation activities.
Incoming Students at Iscte may also attend a full semester of courses focused on European and World History, as well as key issues in Portuguese History.
Admission requirements
An international candidate is considered to be one who:
- has no Portuguese nationality;
- is not national of a member state of the European Union;
- is not a family member of Portuguese or EU national;
- has not resided legally in Portugal for more than two years uninterruptedly;
- has not applied for entry into higher education through the special regimes;
- does not enjoy equal rights and duties under an international treaty granted between the Portuguese State and that of which they are nationals.
An international candidate wishing to apply for an Iscte programme competes through a Special Competition, managed by Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon. In other words, the application is presented and analyzed by the Iscte, through the Candidature Analysis Commission of the undergraduate programme for which the candidate has applied.

Program delivery
The BSc in Modern and Contemporary History is three years long and confers 180 ECTS credits, which are divided into 144 credits in compulsory curricular units and 66 credits in electives, of which 30 should be Interdisciplinary and 6 should be in Transferable Skills.
Tuition
Tuition for EU Nationals: € 2091 for all three years (€697 per year)
Tuition for Non-EU Nationals: € 16,500 (€5,500 per year)
