Program description

Environmental Studies: Environmental Science

Goucher’s Environmental Studies program is designed to encourage thinking across disciplinary boundaries in order to prepare students for meaningful engagement with central environmental questions and challenges facing current and future generations. The program offers students the opportunity to major or minor in a curriculum that bridges social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. After completing a series of core courses in various disciplines, Environmental Studies majors must choose either the Environment and Society concentration or the Environmental Science concentration to complete remaining coursework.

Admission requirements

Goucher College is a four-year residential private liberal arts college. The selection process is highly individualized, and members of Goucher's Admissions Committee read every application, paying particular attention to personal qualities and intellectual promise. Admission is granted to the college for fall and spring semester. We accept the Common Application.

Goucher has adopted a test-optional program, where submitting scores for the SAT Reasoning Test and ACT with writing are optional when applying for admission. Although you may elect not to submit scores as part of the process of determining admission, please know that all admitted applicants who matriculate must furnish test scores for research and advising purposes.

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. For the TOEFL, we require a score of 80 or higher with at least a 20 in each section. For the IELTS we require a score of 28 with no section score lower than 7.0.

Program content

As a field environmental studies seeks to understand the interrelationships of natural phenomena and social structures, systems, and institutions that govern society. To do so, it must engage in the scholarship of particular disciplines, as well as in the scholarship of integration. Environmental Studies students take courses grounded in critical social theory, such as Political Ecology and Environmental Justice, just as they also engage with economic theories of the environment, and physical and biological sciences. Environmental Studies courses encourage students to think critically about pressing environmental problems, while also advocating for political and social change.

Tuition fees

The total cost of attendance is $60,150 per year. This includes tuition and required fees, plus room and board. However, 96% of Goucher students receive financial assistance at an average of $37,500 per year.

Scholarships & funding
