Program description

Business – Finance (Co-op)

Fanshawe's certified financial planner certification co-op program is designed to give you the skills necessary to connect with your future clients and colleagues in the largest financial industry in Canada. In this business finance diploma co-op, you will develop the skills needed to work in the personal financial services sector, from customer service to wealth management and financial planning. In this program you will learn to work with clients, evaluate their needs and offer advice on personal financial management, tax andretirement planning, insurance, investments, and estate planning, as well as customer relations and providing products to clients. Available in a traditional in-class format, with September and January admissions.

Co-operative Education is a process which combines your studies with paid, related work experience. Fanshawe will be there to help you find the right business fit for your dream. You'll have access to consultants who will deliver classes, counsel and advise you as you move from the classroom, to the real business world

After completing this certified financial planner program co-op program, you will be eligible to complete a degree program at many other post-secondary institutions or complement your diploma with a graduate certificate offered at Fanshawe College.

Admission requirements

  • OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH
  • Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
  • Mathematics* ONE OF
    • Any Grade 12 Mathematics (C) or (U)
    • Any Grade 11 Mathematics (C), (U), or (M)

(Note: a minimum final grade of 60required for any Grade 11 Mathematics course)

OR

  • Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) WITH

OR

  • Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) WITH
  • Any Grade 12 Mathematics (C) or (U)
  • Any Grade 11 Mathematics (C), (U), or (M)

(Note: a minimum final grade of 60 required for any Grade 11 Mathematics course)

OR

  • Mature Applicant with standing in the required courses and grades stated above

Note

  • Applicants who lack the required Mathematics may still gain eligibility for admission by completing appropriate prior upgrading

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years SDS Program Requirements
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with a score of 60 in writing, reading and speaking and a score of 50 in listening
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

The tuition fee for Canadian students is 1,360.26 CAD, and the total fees are 2,319.93 CAD.

Credential - Ontario College Diploma

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  1. process and maintain financial records in compliance with relevant policies, procedures and regulations for individuals and/or organizations
  2. prepare and present financial information in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations for individuals and/or organizations
  3. generate financial reports for individuals and/or organizations by applying financial mathematics and statistics
  4. contribute to the development and the implementation of a financial plan to meet individuals’ and/or organizations' needs and objectives
  5. contribute to the development and the implementation of marketing strategies to promote financial products and services and to enhance customer service
  6. develop and implement strategies to establish and maintain professional networking and business relationships in the finance sector
  7. analyze, within a Canadian context, the impact of economic variables, legislation, ethics, technology and the environment on individuals' and/or organizations' operations
  8. develop and implement ongoing strategies for personal and professional development, highlighting ethics, values and standards in the finance sector

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Business - Accounting (Co-op) program are prepared to enter the accounting field in the public sector, the private sector (e.g., manufacturing, service industries and public accounting) as well as the not-for-profit sector. Graduates are suited to a variety of entry-level positions, including accounting assistant, junior accountant, staff accountant, bookkeeper, assistant controller, accounts payable and receivable clerk, billing administrator and tax practitioner
