AMIS Master's in Advanced Materials for Innovation and Sustainability

Welcome to the Master’s Program in Advanced Materials for Innovation and Sustainability (AMIS), a launchpad for understanding the full raw materials value chain and developing a mindset for innovation and entrepreneurship. If you want to influence positive change for the environment and help secure a sustainable future, then get involved and join the AMIS Master’s Program!

Study your first year of AMIS at Grenoble INP in France, Aalto University in Finland or TU Darmstadt in Germany. Then choose your specialisation and progress to another of these three universities or alternatively to the University of Liège in Belgium or the University of Bordeaux in France. Programme Structure

AMIS is a two-year programme:

Year 1 takes place at Grenoble INP, Aalto University or TU Darmstadt. Once students have chosen their entry university, AMIS provides a general curriculum in Materials Sciences, including mandatory courses in Advanced Functional Materials and Innovation, Business and Entrepreneurship.

Year 2 is the specialisation year and takes place at one of the five consortium partner universities. Year 2 includes mandatory courses in Advanced Functional Materials with a specialisation in materials interfaces, nanomaterials, ceramics or hybrids, as well as the Master thesis, a research and development experience in material science jointly supervised by home university professors and host non-academic partners. Student mobility is an integrated part of the programme, involving study at two of the five consortium partner universities, depending on your chosen speciality. Year 1 and Year 2 must be taken at universities in different countries.

Admission requirements

General admission criteria

Successful applicants should hold a Bachelor degree in Science or Technology or Engineering (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science) or its equivalent from an internationally recognised higher education institution that is an official and recognised part of the national education system, and can be found on an official list or in an international handbook that is completed by some international organisation (e.g. UNESCO).

The students in their final year of undergraduate education may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor degree will be awarded before they enrol, respecting the university specific deadlines.

English language test exemptions

Applicants who have completed a higher education degree:

  • In an English language program requiring a physical on-site presence at a university in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the United States. If the degree includes studies from another university, these must also be completed in English in such a country and university that exempts the applicant from the language test.
  • At a university or polytechnic in an EU/EEA country in English. The language of the degree must be stated in the degree certificate or its appendix, the transcript of records or other official document, such as diploma supplement, issued by the higher education institution in question.
  • At one of the EIT-AMIS consortium universities.

The main focus of the adaptation of the AMIR master programme is on metal and mineral raw materials. Bio-base and polymer materials are covered in view of their substitution potential and other materials in the context of multi-material product recycling. In addition, the AMIS Program includes a solid package of courses and project work in innovation and entrepreneurship.
