About this program

Atmospheric Physics, Meteorology and Climatology

The study program focuses on the physical nature of a wide range of atmospheric phenomena and processes, which, however, also have interdisciplinary application in atmospheric chemistry, oceanology, physical geography, environmental sciences, etc. It is a unique program at the Charles University which provides a comprehensive view of the dynamic system of the Earth's atmosphere in a broad interdisciplinary context. Even within the Czech Republic it is the only program offering education in of atmospheric physics, meteorology and climatology. From a methodological point of view, a wide range of theoretical, experimental and computer physics applications are used interactively and complementarily.

Admission requirements

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study programme.

Career paths

The graduate acquires comprehensive scientific knowledge necessary for the study of atmospheric processes within a wider context of other processes occurring in the climate system and the adjacent interplanetary space. The scope of knowledge gained by the graduate includes, in particular, the following areas: atmospheric physics, dynamic and synoptic meteorology, modelling of atmospheric processes, climatology and climate changes, processes in the boundary layer of the atmosphere, turbulences and flow modelling, atmospheric chemistry and air quality or characteristics of the higher atmosphere. The graduate is prepared to creatively work with the acquired knowledge and competence in academic environments, within departmental research and in various applied fields of commerce.

The graduates have ample job opportunities in research institutes and universities or industrial development centres focused on the research of flows, as well as experts in statistical modelling in various business environments, in crisis management in connection with extreme meteorological phenomena or in a number of economic sectors affected by atmospheric phenomena such as the energy industry.
