Program description

Flooding affects millions worldwide. It ruins homes, destroys livelihoods and threatens lives. As a global issue that is strongly influenced by a changing climate, flood engineering offers an exciting and fulfilling career that combines engineering knowledge and skill with managing significant environmental impacts.

The BSc top-up degree is for recent graduates of the FdSc Flood or River and Coastal Engineering Degree. Your BSc will be sponsored if you secure employment with the Environment Agency or a Risk Management Authority.

To develop capable flood risk professionals, the programme sponsor, the Environment Agency, has commissioned Brunel and HR Wallingford, an independent civil engineering and environmental hydraulics organisation, to develop this exciting new range of courses. Our undergraduate Flood and Coastal Engineering programme at Brunel will equip you with the essential skills, knowledge and understanding for a successful career in flood risk management.

The Flood and Coastal Engineering BSc top-up is either a 1 year full-time or a 2 year part-time programme which follows on from the 2-year Flood and Coastal Engineering FdSc programme. It is the equivalent to Level 3 of a standard BSc programme and allows you to obtain Incorporated Engineer status upon degree completion. Key features include:
• an innovative, accredited industry-led academic programme;
• academic fees paid*
• academic programme is complemented by a strong professional development programme to support your rise to Incorporated Engineer, and onwards to Chartered Engineer, which accelerates your career development and enhances your employability.
• summer school at the degree partner, HR Wallingford, and
• The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, CIWEM.
*students applying for sponsorship as employees of the Environment Agency or local authorities, up to 15, fully-funded places available.

Once you’ve completed the BSc, you can progress to the Flood and Coastal Engineering MSc to gain the educational basis for Chartered Engineer status.

We place a very strong emphasis on employability and preparing students to be ready for work. As the sponsor of the programme, the Environment Agency aims to secure a continual intake of high-calibre graduates from this programme to become the flood engineers of the future. There are also opportunities with other flood risk management authorities, Non Governmental Organisations and civil engineering companies.

Roles for Flood and Coastal Engineering graduates include: building flood models to assess flood risk; developing and building flood protection schemes; maintaining and enhancing rivers and natural landforms; providing expert advice about coastal, river and surface water flood risk; delivering a 24/7 incident response service; and providing advice and guidance to communities at risk, flood risk management authorities and developers.
