Built Environment

Do you want to find out how you can keep your country and cities accessible in the future? Want to map out problems in disadvantaged districts? And would you like to design the ideal residential area of the future? Built Environment is the program for you.

International Spatial Development

In our globalising and urbanising world, ever greater importance is placed on cities built for human well-being, with attractive living and working environments, traffic accessibility, traffic safety and sustainability. In the study program International Spatial Development, a differentiation area of Built Environment, you will explore spatial development from an integrated perspective, based on urban planning, urban design and mobility – looking across country borders.

Admission requirements

An equivalent of the Dutch diplomas of higher general secondary education (havo) or pre-university level (vwo) is generally required to enrol on a study program at Breda University of Applied Sciences.

English language requirements

You will also be required to demonstrate sufficient results on one of these tests:

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced/ Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), with a minimum subscore for Speaking of 169
  • Cambridge C2 Advanced/ Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, with a minimum subscore for Speaking of 169
  • IELTS test (minimum overall band score of 6.0, and minimum subscore of 6.0 for speaking)
  • TOEFL test (minimum score of 80 internet-based, and minimum subscore of 20 for speaking)

Program content

Year 1 and 2

The first years are about exploration and integration. You get familiar with the comprehensive discipline. The courses and projects are centred around the following themes:

  • (Dutch) Urban Design
  • Sustainable (Urban) Mobility Planning
  • Smart Cities and Societies
  • Water Management
  • Planning for an Uncertain Future: Flexible Use of Space
  • Energy

During the second year you continue the courses and projects of the first year. At the end of year two you can opt for becoming a specialist:

  • Strategic Designer
  • Urban Planner
  • Sustainable Urban Mobility Manager

Year 3

During the third year, you have courses with in-depth focus on spatial design, technology/engineering, energy and management. You also perform two placements, both lasting for three months.These placements provide you with on-the-job-experience and allow you to learn as you work at a company that matches your interests and ambitions. Your placement can be at an international company in the Netherlands or abroad. Multinationals, consultancy firms or government services are examples of suitable companies.

Year 4

You start your fourth year with a minor program which you choose yourself. BUas offers several programs such as: Society and Space, Space and Mobility or Design.

In the second semester of the fourth year you carry out a 20-week graduation project. As with your placement, the graduation assignment will be at an international company in the Netherlands or abroad.

Tuition fees

In the academic year 2020-2021 the statutory tuition fee for bachelor programs is €2,143. First-year students pay €1,071.You pay the statutory tuition fee if you:

  • have the Dutch nationality or the nationality of another country that is part of the EEA, or the Surinamese or Swiss nationality and
  • have not already obtained a bachelor's degree from a government-funded program in the Netherlands at the start of the academic year.

In all other cases you pay the institutional tuition fee. In the academic year 2020-2021 the institutional fee for bachelor's programs is €9,950.

After successful completion of the Built Environment degree program you are entitled to the degree of Bachelor of Science.

Continuing studies

Breda University of Applied Sciences has made a collaborative arrangement with FH Joanneum (Austria), allowing better preparation for and faster completion of your further studies. At FH Joanneum in Kapfenberg (Austria) you can move on to further study at the hbo master’s program in Energy and transport Management.

Career opportunities

Graduates are equipped to fill a range of positions, such as mobility consultant, traffic researcher or traffic and transport planner at (inter)national:

  • advisory agencies
  • multinationals
  • small and medium-sized enterprises
  • government services

Please be aware of the fact that many graduates start at the bottom of the career ladder - in assistant positions - and work their way up to management positions.
