Program description

The New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Cafe Services) (Level 3) has been carefully designed by a team of industry professionals to give you the skills you need to work in and operate a cafe business.

We have chosen to focus on unit standards that will enable you to work in a safe manner, that will help you to listen to and communicate with your customers, to have the systems and procedures in place that will avoid many common problems in cafes in New Zealand, and be able to prepare, cook and serve food and beverages (including a range of barista coffees). This programme enables students to work in a real cafe environment. You will be dealing with real paying customers with a variety of needs, handling cash and experiencing all the different aspects of running a cafe, including stock control and hygiene training.

Programme Information

The New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service covers the following unit standards:

  • 13282 Prepare, assemble, and present complex sandwiches for service in a commercial kitchen (Level 3, Credits 2)
  • 13325 Prepare and bake basic cakes, sponges, and scones in a commercial kitchen (Level 3, Credits 4)
  • 14441 Provide cafe counter service in a hospitality establishment (Level 3, Credits 5)
  • 17288 Prepare and present espresso beverages for service (Level 3, Credits 5)
  • 27927 Apply health, safety and security practices to service delivery operations (Level 3, Credits 5)
  • 27928 Interact with other staff, managers and customers to provide service delivery outcomes (Level 3, Credits 5)
  • 27929 Apply standard operating procedures and the code of conduct to a work role in a service delivery organisation (Level 3, Credits 5)
  • 27940 Provide cafe table service in a hospitality establishment (Level 3, Credits 5)
  • 27955 Apply food safety practices in a food related business (Level 3, Credits 5)

You will work alongside tutors to run the Asquith Campus cafe allowing you to train on the job. In addition to your certificate you will gain invaluable experience in a real working cafe.

Job Opportunities

Graduates with this qualification will have the technical skills and the soft skills to work in cafes and unlicensed restaurants, and as baristas in a variety of hospitality environments. The supportive and realistic training environment led by highly respected industry professionals allows students to develop confidence in all aspects of cafe management. Former students are working in and managing cafes in New Zealand.
