About this program

Master's in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences

The Signal, Speech and Language Processing major leads to rewarding career opportunities in various fields of science, technology and finance. This international research-oriented graduate programme offers two specialisation paths, equipping the students with essential skills in either signal processing or speech and language processing.

Information rules the world, and skilled experts with the tools to collect and interpret it are more in demand than ever. The Signal, Speech and Language Processing major sits at the intersection of many fascinating disciplines and timely challenges, from automatic understanding of spoken language and predicting the stock market to supporting breakthroughs in climate science or developing better medical technology. Students choose from two specialisations: signal processing or speech and language processing.

Admission requirements

You are eligible to apply in master's admissions if you have a bachelor’s degree. The bachelor's degree must be equivalent to 180 ECTS credits or three years of full-time study. The degree must give eligibility to apply for master’s degree studies at university in the awarding country. The awarding higher education institution has to be a recognised part of the official national education system of the country. It has to be accredited as a degree-granting higher education institution by the country where it is located or by a relevant international organisation (such as UNESCO).

Program content

Overall, the Master’s Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences - Signal, Speech and Language Processing comprises a total of 120 ECTS credits. The major can be completed either as a long (60 ECTS) or compact (40 ECTS) major. Students taking a compact major take also a master level minor (20-25 ECTS). Students taking a long major may include an optional minor in their elective studies.

The first year lays a foundation for machine learning – a topic common to both specialisation tracks – as well as introduces students to the specialisation area of their choice. In addition to the compulsory part of their track, students can create their own unique study track by selecting optional courses from one or several fields.

Studying in the major has a strong emphasis on practical project work. The aim is to improve industry readiness as well as readiness for scientific work by preparing students to solve real-world problems and providing them with the experience of working in teams through many group exercises. Students also benefit from a flexible learning environment, allowing them to personalise their studies according to their unique interests.

The major offers two different study tracks from which students make their choice upon entering the programme. The two study tracks are:

  • Signal processing: Signals are everywhere – making our devices smart, improving medical imaging and solving essential problems of great societal impact.
  • Speech and language processing: To make devices understand spoken language and seamlessly communicate with humans is one of the great future challenges of our society. Computational modelling of human speech and language opens the door also to the exciting world of human perception and behavior.

Study Objectives

Benefiting from world-class research and facilities, students graduating from the programme will have:

  • A strong theoretical and methodological background of modern signal processing or speech and language processing. Graduates specialised in signal processing possess a toolbox of knowledge on signals and systems modelling, data representations, optimization and skills to implement practical signal processing technologies for multisensor systems. Graduates specialised in speech and language processing possess tools for statistical language modeling and speech analysis.
  • Advanced programming skills. Graduates master various programming languages and tools, and have the ability to design, implement, test and maintain software systems.
  • Extensive data analysis skills. Graduates have an in-depth understanding of the nature of data and how it can be translated into information by machine learning.
  • Extensive knowledge about the most recent research practicalities. Graduates benefit from the top-notch research led by professors and researchers and have the basis needed to embark on a career in research, should they wish to do so.

Continuing studies

The Master's programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences - Signal, Speech and Language Processing at Aalto is considered a great foundation for doctoral studies and post-doc positions.

Career paths

Graduates of the programme have an exceptionally wide range of career paths in front of them. As signals  (e.g., images, speech and sound, or measurements from diverse sensor systems) are acquired, processed and transmitted nearly in every imaginable field, graduates may be employed in the health technology, quantitative finance, consumer electronics, or even in the entertainment industry. Common professions include:

  • Researcher within a company
  • Consultant working with various organisations
  • Engineer within a company
  • Founder of a company.
