Bachelor's Program in Economics
The Economics program is for analytical students who are fascinated by complex challenges such as climate change, global inequality and financial instability. We are looking for analytically minded and intellectually curious students who share our passion for understanding how societies work. We offer world-class training that combines analytical, computation and data processing skills that are high in demand and open the door to a wide range of careers.
After completing the Bachelor in Economics you will have:
- A strong understanding of economic theory: Understand and interpret real-world phenomena in the light of economic theories.
- A comprehensive analytical toolkit: Strong analytical skills in economics combined with computation and data processing skills.
- Systematic approach & critical thinking: Systematic approach to complex societal questions and economic phenomena.
- A solid foundation for further education: Students admitted to the Bachelor’s Programme in Economics will automatically be eligible to continue for the Master's Degree programme in Economics at Aalto University School of Business or in other Master's Degree Programmes at the Aalto University School of Business (according to transfer regulations). The Department of Economics also has a strong track record of helping students to enter some of the most prestigious graduate programmes abroad.

Admission requirements
All applicants must fulfill the general eligibility requirements for higher education. You are eligible to apply if you have completed or will complete during spring 2020 one of the following Programs:
- Finnish matriculation examination
- International Baccalaureate degree (IB)
- European Baccalaureate degree (EB)
- Deutsches Internationales Abitur degree (DIA) or Reifeprüfung degree (RP) in Finland
- A degree or qualification completed outside Finland that in the awarding country gives eligibility for university studies
- A Finnish vocational upper secondary qualification, further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification as set in the Vocational Education Act (531/2017)
- Advanced International Certificate of Education degree (AICE) in Finland
Admission to the Bachelor's Program in Economics is based on either grades obtained in Finnish Matriculation Examination, IB-, EB- or RP -degree or SAT test results. In addition, admission can also be based on applicants exceptional merits and grades obtained in Finnish Matriculation Examination, IB-, EB- or RP -degree, or applicants performance in Talousguru competition, Finnish National High School Mathematics Competition or Datatähti contest (competitions for upper secondary school students in 2020). In Transfer student admission the general eligibility requirements for higher education is not required.
Applicants with a right to study only for a Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) at the Aalto University School of Business cannot be admitted through the processes described in this document. In addition, applicants with an existing right to study towards both a bachelor’s and master’s degree at the Aalto University School of Business cannot be admitted to the bachelor’s program for which he or she already has a valid right to study.
Program-specific admission requirements
Students accepted to the program will get a study right to the Master of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration at the Aalto University School of Business. The Master’s program in Economics is integrated into the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics.

Program content
The program in economics is organised by the School of Business and comprises a total of 180 ECTS. The three-year program consists of:
- Basic studies
- Major studies, including Bachelor’s thesis
- Business studies
- Minor studies
- Electives
- Language & communications studies
You have the opportunity to complete your minor studies at an official exchange program partner school of Aalto School of Business.
Economics is a social science building on rigorous theoretical models and careful data analysis. In the degree, aimed at analytical and mathematically driven students, you will study formal modelling, empirical methods and institutions at the leading centre of economic research in Finland. Your studies also include sequences in mathematics and programming, taught at the Aalto School of Science. Thus, we draw on the core competencies of Aalto University, particularly the ones at the Business School and the School of Sciences.

Tuition
For non-EU/EEA citizens: 12000 €/year (Bachelor's) + 15000 €/year (Master's)
Qualification
Upon completion of the program, students will graduate with a Bachelor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) degree.
Continuing studies
After the Bachelor’s degree, students automatically have the right to continue studies in a Master’s program at Aalto University.
Career paths
Economics opens up opportunities to pursue a career in major national and international institutions that demand rigorous analytical reasoning and data analysis. Most economics students continue their studies at the Master’s level. Upon graduation, students move on to securing roles in major companies, government, research, finance, startups and NGOs. Graduates of the economics program typically become analysts, consultants, advisors to policymakers or researchers in their first jobs.
Aalto University has well-established career services which help you get employed in Finland and abroad. Aalto students tend to find good positions with ease upon their graduation. There is also a very active entrepreneurship community at Aalto, which can help as a springboard for founding a company.
