30 Documentary Studies Degree Programs

Students who join the M.F.A. program in Documentary take advantage of the combined focus on both cinematic arts and journalistic approaches. You benefit further from the School’s many strengths such as Interactive Media, Strategic Communication, and Communication for Global Social Change.

For one month each year, 15 selected participants co-direct a series of 3-5 minute documentaries with OTOXO Productions. These shorts are distributed to festivals & media outlets around the world and streamed on the OTOXO platform. For these reasons alone we demand the highest quality of work from our participants and provide them with the highest quality of training to ensure it.

The Documentary Film programme is focused on the auteur concept of the creative documentary. During the two-year studies, the students are guided to find their author’s or directorial voice and develop their factual storytelling skills. Each semester supports the development of both authorship and technical and analytical skills. Students create one short documentary each semester and complete their studies with a final film.

Each year, 15 individuals are given the opportunity to co-direct a 60-minute documentary with OTOXO Productions to be screened on BTV. Simultaneously, participants are provided with an intensive nine-month training course covering all elements of documentary studies and production. Following this, the participants are given three months of training focused on becoming film industry professionals, whilst at the same time, they follow these steps and become film industry professionals in their own right.

The ESCAC Documentary Master's program is an immersion for the student in the practical and theoretical dimensions of the different formats of today's documentary.

MA Documentary and Factual will give you the skills and understanding needed to work as a director and/or producer in today’s factual content industries. Specific topics include finding and developing ideas, researching protagonists, learning interview techniques, researching and accessing contributors, creating stories, and pitching ideas.

MA Wildlife Documentary Production will give you the research, scriptwriting and technical skills you need to pursue a career within the wildlife documentary sector. You’ll study at our MediaCity campus, which is located in a hub of digital and media businesses plus home to the BBC and ITV. Our campus is equipped with industry-standard equipment including TV studios, green screen facilities, audio production facilities, stop-frame studio, computer suites and editing studios. The MA Documentary and Factual course focus on the creative, technical, and industry skills you need to develop documentaries and factual programming across the contemporary media landscape. The Master Documentary Film program prepares authors dedicated to this cinematographic genre. The study program addresses all aspects of training professionals in the field, combining theory with practice. The stages of creating and making the documentary are assumed conceptually and concretely by students, they are thus encouraged to address research topics in the area of cinematic language, working methods, role and social impact of documentary film.
