The Diploma in Practical Nursing at Northern Lights College follows the new provincial curriculum as revised in 2017. The program is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, judgments, and attitudes to perform to the full range of competencies as endorsed by the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP). Upon successful completion of the program, learners will possess the competencies to successfully complete the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE).

Our program emphasizes collaboration, health promotion, and family-centered nursing. You'll be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to work in a wide variety of healthcare settings, both rural and urban. Our enthusiastic, experienced instructors focus on building your competency in nursing practice through imaginative, innovative classroom and lab experiences. As a graduate, you'll be eligible to write the national licensing examination administered through the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).

The two-year graduate certificate program is designed for internationally educated nurses with a four-year bachelor's degree in nursing.

Licensed practical nurses are a vital part of today’s health care team—in acute hospital care, long-term care, and in the community. You provide compassionate, professional nursing care to individuals throughout the human lifespan; infants to seniors.

Licensed Practical Nurses provide compassionate, professional nursing care to patients and clients of all ages. Learn how to integrate theory into practice and bring a holistic, humanistic approach to patient care. Study anatomy, physiology, the foundations of health, pharmacology, health assessment, long-term and rehabilitative care, medical and surgical care, obstetrics, pediatrics, mental health, addictions, and more. Standard First Aid/CPR Healthcare Provider ‘C’ AED, TLR, and WHMIS along with clinical practice and practicums are included. When you graduate, you’ll be eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nursing Registration Exam and be able to pursue one of the numerous opportunities available in acute-care, rehab-care, long-term care, home care, and medical centers.

The three-year nursing program will prepare students to meet the demanding challenges of the nursing profession. Theoretical and experiential learning in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities will be enhanced with fieldwork in hospitals and health care centers of the surrounding region. Students will receive clinical experiences in specialties such as ambulatory care, geriatrics, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, medicine, and surgery.

The Practical Nursing program gives students the critical thinking skills needed to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. They will learn how to evaluate patient progress, interact with other professionals and deliver nursing care to clients and their families in various settings. Through clinical placements, students link theory with practice to gain valuable experience in the health care environment. Graduates of the program are eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE).

The UCN Diploma in Practical Nursing (DPN) program is a two-year diploma, currently offered in Swan River and Flin Flon. The DPN program provides students with the knowledge and skills base to work as a professional member of the health care team and successfully assume leadership roles.

This program prepares students to provide nursing care to a varied clientele. These healthcare professionals work in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, medical clinics, as well as home care agencies. Collège de l'Île has two campuses: in Wellington (in the west of the province) and in Charlottetown (the provincial capital). Regular programming is available from these two campuses. We use videoconferencing and the Vidyo system as a means of delivering courses in all of our programs. You therefore have the possibility of following your theoretical courses from both campuses. For the practical nurse program, the nursing laboratory is located at the Wellington campus. So, if you take your theory classes at the Charlottetown campus, you will have to make your own way to the Wellington campus for the lab work.

The Practical Nursing Ontario College Diploma program prepares you for work in the healthcare system. You learn the necessary skills and techniques for the workforce. This includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation tools required to provide nursing care to those of all ages. Throughout the program, learning opportunities include theory, lab techniques, applied experiences, and independent study.

This 85-week PGDNP program is designed to prepare Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) to adapt to Canadian health care setting combining theory and skills based on the entry-level competencies for Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics. Furthermore, it will help learners to advance the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to function effectively as Health Care Assistants (HCAs), LPN and/or RN as well as to develop critical thinking skills and acquire knowledge in becoming a culturally competent nurse while providing care.
