Adapted from our popular Communication and Culture Program for international university students and professionals, this summer youth program offers international high school students (ages 14-17) an enriching, transformational educational experience. The Communication Studies Transfer major focuses on how people construct, use, and interpret messages across multiple channels to inform, persuade, manage, relate, and generally influence each other within and across varying cultural venues. Emphasis is also placed on identifying and valuing disparate systems of social norms and values that influence the human communicative process.

Communication is the study of how humans construct meanings through interactions. Courses in this area may focus on the knowledge and skills needed to communicate effectively in oral, written, or visual forms; on the study of language and culture; and/or on a critical understanding of the structures and patterns of different kinds of communication as they affect individuals and society. Studies in Communication, Media, and Languages are designed for students interested in pursuing further studies in English, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Communication Studies, and World Languages at four-year institutions. It may be useful for students interested in pursuing careers in communications, graphic design, journalism, law, marketing, public relations, radio and television, translating, and writing, among others.

The Associate of Arts in Journalism for Transfer provides a broad base of education in the discipline and introduces students to journalism and multimedia. It gives students the option of studying journalistic writing for traditional and online media. Completion of the degree provides students with the core skills and knowledge needed to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Journalism.

Journalism courses aren’t just about writing news articles. In our department, you’ll have an opportunity to explore important life skills such as analytical thinking, research and interviewing skills, concise writing, design and social media marketing. The journalism industry is evolving and it can take you beyond the newsroom into tech, public relations, marketing, brand management, copywriting or advertising.

A major in journalism prepares students to employ ethical principles and practical skills in the presentation of their journalistic product to the public in print and online. Journalism majors excel in storytelling with text and in digital and video formats. As a journalism major, you will master the art of reporting and writing and learn about legal issues that affect the media. Through this program of study, you will be able to demonstrate an applicable knowledge of the principles of ethical and socially responsible journalism. You will gain a working knowledge of the equipment and software used by news media and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in news media and other related occupations.

The Journalism program seeks to prepare students to enter the workforce in journalism and its related fields (such as public relations and advertising) and to offer opportunities to students making a career switch or needing to meet the changing technological demands of the field.

The Strategic Communication and Leadership certificate focuses on the critical areas of strategic communication, organizational culture, change management, team building and teamwork, and diversity and globalization. The certificate provides the knowledge; skills and abilities such as effective communication skills face-to-face, in groups, or online; that modern professionals need to succeed and grow their organizations.

Visual communication and creativity are essential to our collective memory and function as tools to preserve events and human experience beyond historical records. Design, photography, animation, and other forms of creative arts are society's communication means and a vehicle for pleasure, aesthetics, and social change.

The BTS Communication aims to train you in the design, implementation and management of internal or external communication operations such as advertising, relational, event and institutional. In an agency, you will also have a commercial and advisory role with advertisers. The distance learning BTS COM will train you in different areas of communication.

A Communication Studies Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) from Skyline College is intended for students who are interested in transferring to a California State University (CSU) campus with a major in Communication Studies, or similar major.

Our Journalism summer programme introduces students to the exciting world of the media, giving them the skills they need to use the power of words to tell impactful stories that can educate and entertain others.

Research has shown that strong communication skills provide the necessary foundation needed to be successful in business, social, and personal relationships. According to the National Communication Association, “At its foundation, communication focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, and is the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry.”
