The Visual Communications Department emphasizes a variety of creative and technical skills in preparing students for a career in advertising, publishing, and public relations. The 2-year Associate of Technical Arts (ATA) degree also includes fundamental business practices which empower students to work in the gig economy as a freelancer and/or as part of a company. Journalism courses aren’t just about writing news articles. In our department, you’ll have an opportunity to explore important life skills such as analytical thinking, research and interviewing skills, concise writing, design and social media marketing. The journalism industry is evolving and it can take you beyond the newsroom into tech, public relations, marketing, brand management, copywriting or advertising.

The Communication Program prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to obtain a degree in communication or a related social science field.

The Communication Studies program is designed for students interested in studying how humans construct and share meaning. This program allows individuals to become communicators in various social contexts, from interpersonal to debate to public communication. Completion of the Communication Studies: Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) will prepare you to meet minimum lower-division admission requirements (60 transferable units) for transfer to a California State University (CSU). The Communication Studies program map below includes all of your major coursework and recommendations.

A major in journalism prepares students to employ ethical principles and practical skills in the presentation of their journalistic product to the public in print and online. Journalism majors excel in storytelling with text and in digital and video formats. As a journalism major, you will master the art of reporting and writing and learn about legal issues that affect the media. Through this program of study, you will be able to demonstrate an applicable knowledge of the principles of ethical and socially responsible journalism. You will gain a working knowledge of the equipment and software used by news media and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in news media and other related occupations.

Graphic communications is a great career for creatively minded people who also enjoy computers and technology. Though the tools for design have changed from pen and paper to computers and software, ideas and artistic skill are still important. If you are a creative person with technical savvy, this career is for you. After earning the associate degree, students can pursue a number of certificates that focus on areas such as digital photography and digital publishing.

The Associate in Arts degree is a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) designed for students who plan to transfer to a university after completing the first two years of study at Peninsula College. The degree is recommended for students who have not yet decided the field they will enter or the university they will attend. It gives students the broad background they need before beginning more specialized, upper-division courses and indicates that a student has completed a two-year liberal arts program.

The Web Designer degree and all but one of the certificates are available entirely online.
