Master in New Media Music Composition – students work on their own mature creative language by implementing advanced art projects including interactive music, sound installations, audiovisual compositions and activities in virtual spaces. The Composition for Media specialization track is intended for students pursuing a master’s degree in composition seeking to specialize in composing music for cinema, television and the visual media. Over four semesters students will gain experience in composition for a picture, orchestration, use of currently leading DAW software (Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools, Ableton Live), recording and mix.

The MFA in Music Scoring & Composition is designed to provide the highest level of training in music composition and scoring for film, television, games, and other visual media. Balancing musicianship training with contemporary production skills to reflect a changing music industry, students will learn music theory, composition, harmony, orchestration, and arranging, focusing on creating emotion through music in synchronization with visual media. Students will use the latest computer-based production workflows, digital audio workstations, and virtual instrument libraries. The focus is on composition using virtual instruments, resulting in a thesis project and portfolio in the final year.

The Master’s Programme in Composition at HAMU is a two-year, full-time course taught in English, designed for graduates who wish to develop their artistic voice, technical mastery, and professional presence as contemporary composers.

Composition studies, harmony and voice leading, music analysis, and instrumentation are at the core of the program. As a master’s student, you will focus on deepening your professional expertise and completing studies that support your personal identity as a composer.

Master in performing music or composition The master's program in performing music or composition at the Grieg Academy is an offer for instrumentalists, singers and composers in the genres of classical, jazz and traditional music. The program places emphasis on further developing the students' artistic profile, and strengthening the ability for academic reflection and independence. The master's program has two parallel courses throughout the program: main instrument or composition and project work. The project work is divided into three sub-projects and provides an opportunity for in-depth study of one or more self-chosen topics within one's own executive or creative fields of interest. The project work will support the performing / creative work by helping to increase awareness of and to be able to reflect on musical issues. Great freedom is given in the choice of documentation forms in relation to the nature of the projects (oral or digital presentation form).

The Master’s program in composition aims to enable the student to develop a clear personal artistic profile. It allows students to broaden their horizons in a specific way as well as to develop comprehensive practical skills to tackle the issues associated with composing music. The central focus of the program is an extensive composition project (e.g. a composition for music theater, ensemble or orchestra, a surround sound project, an interdisciplinary project, a performative project, or an electronic or live electronic composition). The content and format should be outlined in an exposé (see entrance examination below) and agreed with the head of studies. Students should approach all aspects of the project through research, discursive reflection, and practical experimentation. The contents of the program will be adapted to the needs and requirements of the respective project and hence to the needs of the individual student.
