The MA in Music Scoring & Composition provides students with focused training in music composition and production workflows, digital audio workstations, virtual instruments, and industry standard practices in music scoring for visual media. Building on a foundation of musicianship, students will learn contemporary scoring techniques which provide the necessary skills for success in changing music industry. Emphasis is placed on creating emotion through music, MIDI orchestration, and synchronization with visual media.

The Composition for Media specialization track is intended for students pursuing a master’s degree in composition seeking to specialize in composing music for cinema, television and the visual media. Over four semesters students will gain experience in composition for a picture, orchestration, use of currently leading DAW software (Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools, Ableton Live), recording and mix.

The MFA in Music Scoring & Composition is designed to provide the highest level of training in music composition and scoring for film, television, games, and other visual media. Balancing musicianship training with contemporary production skills to reflect a changing music industry, students will learn music theory, composition, harmony, orchestration, and arranging, focusing on creating emotion through music in synchronization with visual media. Students will use the latest computer-based production workflows, digital audio workstations, and virtual instrument libraries. The focus is on composition using virtual instruments, resulting in a thesis project and portfolio in the final year.

Our program will equip you with the skills to master the entire music production process, from musical composing to post-production, in the music-for-media landscape: film, advertising, television series, video games, and so forth. Master in performing music or composition The master's program in performing music or composition at the Grieg Academy is an offer for instrumentalists, singers and composers in the genres of classical, jazz and traditional music. The program places emphasis on further developing the students' artistic profile, and strengthening the ability for academic reflection and independence. The master's program has two parallel courses throughout the program: main instrument or composition and project work. The project work is divided into three sub-projects and provides an opportunity for in-depth study of one or more self-chosen topics within one's own executive or creative fields of interest.
