8 Pre-Nursing Preparatory Programs

The role of the nurse is more important than ever, as communities are currently in an era of provider shortages. In fact, nurses make up the largest healthcare profession in the United States. They work in a variety of settings, which include clinics, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community settings. TCC offers courses that cover the first two years of a typical four-year college nursing program (college-level courses). This Pre-Nursing transfer degree is intended for students who want to take science and general education classes at Tacoma Community College to prepare to transfer to a four-year school to begin their nursing classes and earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

The Biology degree in Pre-Nursing prepares students to transfer to a four-year program at a baccalaureate institution. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduates choose from first-level professional nursing staff positions in specializations which include community health, geriatrics, maternity, mental health, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery.

The Associate in Pre-Nursing Direct Transfer Agreement or Major Related Program (DTA/MRP) streamlines preparation for the basic BSN pathway by ensuring students complete prerequisite courses for pre-licensure BSN programs (programs that do not require a nursing license for admission) at participating colleges and universities.

The Vocational Qualification in Social and Health Care, Practical Nurse (top-up) Program in Finland offers an accelerated pathway to becoming a certified practical nurse for students with prior education. Lasting just one year, this intensive program focuses on essential nursing skills and clinical experience. Graduates receive a Finnish vocational qualification in Social and Health Care upon successful completion, marking their readiness to enter the nursing profession.

The outcomes for the Associate of Pre-Nursing degree incorporate those for the AA-DTA degree. In addition, a student earning an Associate of Pre-Nursing will: Demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in preparation to transfer to a four-year university in nursing. The General Requirements for the Associate of Pre-Nursing are the same as those for the AA-DTA degree.
