Students who successfully complete the AS-T in Mathematics earn specific guarantees for transfer to the CSU system: admission to a CSU with junior status and priority admission to their local CSU campus and to a program or major in Mathematics or a similar major. Students transferring to a CSU campus will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree.

The Certificate of Math for Surveying and Computer-Aided Design branches place a heavy emphasis on problem-solving. Engineering education focuses on teaching mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles and their application to the creative and effective solution of problems.

The Associate of Arts Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Natural Sciences and Mathematics requires completion of 64 credits which must include the General Education Core plus 18 ± 24 credits in Science and/or Mathematics courses taken from subjects in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This degree provides a solid liberal arts foundation accompanied by strong preparation in Science and Math. Completion of this degree prepares students to continue in multiple science baccalaureate programs as well as programs in health sciences.

Mathematics is the language of the sciences and as such, these courses are needed as prerequisites to science courses and for student success in general. In the modern world, there are many fields that need specialists in mathematics. Careers in mathematics include scientists, researchers, programmers, and other specialists in information systems, mathematics teachers, actuaries, and insurance specialists, and people who can combine mathematical knowledge with a scientific, technological, or business background. The Associate in Science degree in Mathematics will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the Major course requirements and the General Education requirements.

Mathematics provides the foundation for studying engineering; the biological, physical and health sciences; economics; business; computer science; statistics; and many other fields. A major in mathematics itself opens up job opportunities in numerous fields, as mathematical problem-solving skills are widely applicable.

The Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Natural Science and Mathematics provides students the opportunity to develop knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data about living and nonliving systems. Students will achieve an understanding and appreciation of scientific principles and the scientific method, as well as the potential limits of scientific endeavors and the value systems and ethics associated with human inquiry. In addition, students shall develop skills and understanding beyond the level of intermediate algebra. Students will not just practice computational skills but will be able to explain and apply basic mathematical concepts and will be able to solve problems through quantitative reasoning.

The Mathematics Department offers a range of courses for a variety of needs and plans of study. We support the professional and technical programs as well as the transfer programs. We offer several PreCollege courses that satisfy requirements for students obtaining certificates and students preparing for college-level mathematics courses. Our college-level courses prepare students for the sciences and engineering curriculum, satisfy prerequisites for admission to colleges of business and education, and create the foundation of undergraduate mathematics curriculum for math majors.

These courses emphasize the natural sciences, which examine the physical universe, its life forms, and its natural phenomena. Math courses emphasize mathematical, analytical, and reasoning skills beyond the level of intermediate algebra. Science courses emphasize an understanding of the process of science and the scientific method. Courses emphasize the use of mathematics and science as investigative tools, the role of mathematics and science as part of human civilization and society, and the inherent value of inductive and deductive reasoning as part of the human experience.

The Associate in Science in Mathematics for Transfer Degree (AS-T) is designed for students planning to transfer into a mathematics major. Successful completion of the program with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 affords students specific guarantees for transfer to the CSU system such as admission to a CSU with junior status, priority admission to a CSU campus with a similar major, and to a program or major in mathematics or similar major.

The Associate in Science Degree in Mathematics for Transfer is designed to prepare the student for transfer to institutions of higher education and is specifically intended to satisfy the lower-division requirements for the Baccalaureate Degree in Mathematics at a California State University (but does not guarantee acceptance to a particular campus or major). It will also provide the student with a sufficient academic basis to pursue a career in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, and education. Completion of the Associate in Science Degree in Mathematics for Transfer (ADT) will prepare you to meet minimum lower-division admission requirements (60 transferable units) for transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC). Some UC schools may require additional coursework; please meet with a counselor for further assistance. The Mathematics Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) is designed for students planning to transfer into a mathematics major. By completing this degree, students will gain a strong foundation in the mathematical field. This knowledge will be grounded in quantitative and analytical reasoning, and students will gain a practical and theoretical understanding for future studies in mathematics.

The Associate in Science in Mathematics for Transfer is designed to facilitate successful transfer to a baccalaureate mathematics program. This degree provides the lower division breadth and depth of calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. Students who complete the requirements for this degree will be prepared to continue their studies in mathematics. Students in the STEM fields can complete a majority, if not all, of their lower division Math requirements by completing the Associate in Science in Mathematics for Transfer degree requirements.

The AS-T degree in Mathematics is designed to prepare students for transfer into the mathematics major at any university in the CSU system. It requires fewer units than the AS degree and allows students to have a wider range of choices to complete the degree requirements.

The Mathematics Department offers a rich curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students at Laney College. Our course offerings include those transferable to four-year colleges/universities, those tailored for programs in career and technical education, along with those designed to help students strengthen their basic skills.

The mathematics program is designed to give students the analytical and logical thinking skills necessary for solving problems in a variety of contexts such as science, business, computer programming, social science, and engineering.
