Mathematics is beautiful and useful. Students of mathematics learn both how to explore abstract mathematical ideas and also how to solve quantitative problems from the natural and social sciences.

Mathematics is a universal part of human culture. It is also the quantitative language of the social, biological, and physical sciences. For these reasons, mathematics is a valuable and essential component of a liberal arts education. All Scripps students must take the placement exam given during fall orientation at Scripps and are encouraged to enroll in math courses whether or not they are considering a major in mathematics.

What is mathematics? What are its major methods and conclusions? How is it related to other subjects? What do modern mathematicians do? Several Pitzer courses specifically address these questions. Ones that have been taught in recent years include: The Mathematics of Gambling, Rubik’s Cube and Other Mathematical Puzzles, Doodling in Mathematics Class, 3D Printing, History of Algebra, and Philosophy of Mathematics. These courses cover mathematical material that is exciting and sophisticated and yet accessible to students with a standard high school education in mathematics. As such, they offer students an excellent opportunity to break fresh ground in kinds of mathematics they are not likely to have seen before. All of these courses meet Pitzer’s Educational Objective in Quantitative Reasoning.

Mathematics is an undergraduate program that provides a comprehensive education in mathematical theory, problem-solving skills, and analytical thinking. Here are the key aspects and topics typically covered in a Mathematics degree program: Foundational Mathematics: The program usually starts with foundational courses in mathematics, including calculus, algebra, geometry, and mathematical analysis. These courses build a strong mathematical background and introduce fundamental concepts such as functions, limits, derivatives, integrals, equations, and proofs.

Every student is required to have a basic understanding of the theory and methods of the sciences. Accordingly, students are required to successfully complete a total of three courses (at least 12 units) that provide experiences in the sciences and mathematics. Of the three, at least one course (4-units) must be a laboratory science (CPLS).

The master's degree offers in-depth training in mathematics in the first year, open to both fundamental mathematics and applied mathematics. The second year offers a specialization that enhances the theoretical background of the first year and opens up towards applied or theoretical mathematics courses with a view to pursuing a doctorate, and towards more professional courses aimed at actuarial professions, the finance and data science.

We offer courses that, in the true spirit of the liberal arts, emphasize beautiful underlying ideas, their social and historical context, and their amazing explanatory power. The mathematics major emphasizes the foundational structures of essential mathematical subjects. The flexibility of the mathematical sciences major, on the other hand, lets students focus their major on connections to other disciplines. Students in each major strengthen their problem-solving, abstract-reasoning, and communication abilities.

You will have the opportunity to take part in competitions such as the BEBRAS Challenge and the UKMT individual and team challenges. Our most accomplished students can take part in the Senior Kangaroo Challenge. The Pomona College Mathematics and Statistics Department’s philosophy is that mathematics is an exciting field that offers something for everybody. The department has created a supportive, inclusive community through mentoring groups and by promoting collaborative work. Beyond calculus and linear algebra, you’ll take courses in algebra, analysis, topology/geometry, modeling, and statistics. Majors then focus on a track in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, general mathematics and statistics. The senior exercise involves directed research, under the supervision of faculty. Many students do summer research.
