In WAT-CHANGE - Water-Related Ecosystem Services for Adapting Societies to Climate Change Seasonal School aims at introducing the participants to the new growing area of solutions provided by water-related ecosystem services. In particular, we will deal with nature-based solutions for water supply, treatment of polluted water, and flood risk mitigation such as managed aquifer recharge, river restoration, constructed wetlands, sustainable drainage systems, and remediation of contaminated sites using phytoremediation techniques.

Environmental science is the study of the interaction of humans and the physical and biological systems of the earth, and the dependence on natural resources by humans. It involves the study of the interaction and co-evolution of human, physical, and biological systems. At TCC, you can earn an Associate in Science with a Specialization in Environmental Science. Upon completion of this program, you will be prepared to transfer to a four-year institution.

The ADT in Environmental Science introduces the concepts and principles upon which environmental knowledge is based, including the biological, chemical, and physical concepts underlying scientific theory and application to environmental issues. Students will develop skills for critical/analytical thinking, perceptive reading/observation, and interpretation to apply to environmental concerns affecting our everyday lives. The AS-T in Environmental Science provides students with a core curriculum to develop key skills for applying biological, physical, and chemical principles to the study of the environment and developing solutions to environmental problems.

The Associate in Science in Environmental Science for Transfer degree is an interdisciplinary degree that combines social science, policy, and human behavior with physical and biological sciences. The degree consists of earth sciences and economics with a focus on the environment.

Environmental Science combines information from biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, stressing a scientific approach toward understanding the nature and scope of current environmental issues.

The Environmental Technologist program is designed for people who have a love for the outdoors and a strong interest in environmental sustainability. This program allows students to learn about the natural world in the classroom, spend an abundant amount of time in the field with hands-on learning, and the ability to apply it to current natural resource management issues.

You’ll learn about matter and energy down to the molecular level. Courses build a solid foundation in general chemistry and develop your understanding of the scientific method of experimentation, observation, and analysis of results. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in the lab.

Goucher’s Environmental Studies Program is designed to encourage thinking across disciplinary boundaries in order to prepare students for meaningful engagement with central environmental questions and challenges facing current and future generations. The program offers students the opportunity to major or minor in a curriculum that bridges social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. After completing a series of core courses in various disciplines, environmental studies majors must choose either the environment and society concentration or the environmental science concentration to complete remaining coursework.

We offer three majors, Environmental Science, Environmental Science Chemistry Emphasis, and Environmental Studies. Listed below are the requirements for each of these majors. The Environmental Studies Program also offers an Environmental Studies minor. The minor is advised by faculty affiliated with the Environmental Studies Program and can complement any major offered by Colorado College.

The environmental studies major will provide you with an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental issues and includes courses from the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. By developing a broad foundation of knowledge and integrative thinking skills, you will graduate with the intellectual tools and breadth of understanding to confront environmental challenges of the present and future. You are also encouraged to explore independent and summer research possibilities and utilize the many resources provided by the Miller Worley Center for the Environment.

The Environmental Studies department is dedicated to training the next generation of environmental scholars, activists, and educators for the world that they will inherit. Now and over the coming decades, human societies face daunting environmental challenges. We must find rational, holistic and ethically grounded ways to combat these issues. In collaboration with Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges, students can pursue a major or minor in Environmental Studies. Environmental Studies students apply critical thinking and analytical skills within a holistic systems framework that includes social justice as an essential component.

Wabash College’s Environmental Studies minor provides students with an opportunity to apply a liberal arts perspective to environmental issues and questions of sustainability, linking traditional scientific study of the environment to the role the environment plays in human experience and society. Human society relies on a healthy, functioning global ecosystem for its survival, but human activities often damage the environment and undermine its capacity to support us. While such environmental degradation has occurred throughout human history, environmental issues have increasingly moved to the forefront of public discourse, even to the point of being considered the greatest existential threat to humanity. Addressing issues of biodiversity and ecological resiliency in our curriculum is an essential aspect of our stated mission to educate responsible, humane leaders. Students minoring in Environmental Studies are expected to help catalyze more environmental interest and action on campus, supporting a transformation to a renewable, more sustainable, Wabash College.
