Latin American and Latinx Studies is an interdisciplinary program offered by the Modern and Classical Literatures and Cultures (MCLC) Department, designed to further understanding of the cultures, histories, and politics of Latin America as well as Latinx communities in the U.S. as viewed from regional and global perspectives.

Latin American studies offers an interdisciplinary structure for the systematic study of Latin America, an area that encompasses countries in North, Central, and South America as well as the Caribbean, whose distinct geography and cultures are unified by elements of a common heritage. Profound geographic variations, differing economic resources, and the intermingling of multiple racial, ethnic, and cultural groups have yielded complex and diverse societies. Increasing socioeconomic contacts among states and societies in the Americas and the growing presence of Latinos in the United States underscore the need for U.S. citizens to deepen their understanding of the region.

The Spanish/LACLS combined major includes a combination of Latin American Studies and Spanish courses. All majors must also take at least one semester of study abroad in a College-affiliated program in a Latin American country.

At the center of Wabash College’s curriculum since its founding, the Classics delve into the history, art, archaeology, mythology, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome. The Wabash Classics department continues to give instruction in Greek and Latin from beginning to advanced levels as the most immediate means of exploring the ancient world, of understanding the structure and vocabulary of our English language, and of preparing for the technical vocabulary used in the medical and legal professions today. In the concentration in Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies, students will explore the history, politics and culture of the diverse social groups linked to the greater legacy of Latin American societies in the United States. MALS students take four classes within the program — Seminar in Interdisciplinary Studies, two core courses in their chosen concentration, and the thesis/capstone project — and choose their remaining electives from among courses offered across the doctoral and certificate programs in the Social Sciences and Humanities at The Graduate Center.

The Diploma of Classical Languages complements the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts. Students who enrol in the course will learn the languages in which the Western Tradition was originally articulated and expressed and thus access the texts in their original language, free from the interpretations of translation.

Students who pursue the Latin major read a wide variety of authors and can expect to achieve a high level of competency in the ancient language of the Romans. Coursework includes such favorites as Vergil, Ovid, Cicero, Julius Caesar, and Catullus, but students can expect to be able to read other authors like the historians (Livy, Sallust, and Tacitus) and genres like lyric, satire, and drama.
