The Doctoral Program in Basic and Applied Research in Veterinary Sciences, proposes advanced and specialized training in the body of conceptual, procedural and technical knowledge that allows adequate development in the field of biomedical sciences. This Program is characterized by its interdisciplinarity, covering basic, applied and clinical areas. It has the participation of different research groups that develop their activity in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

This is a program marked by multidisciplinarity in terms of teacher and student qualifications since it involves researchers from four different departments of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Plant Production, Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Plant Physiology and Botany), four research centers (Centro de Investigaciones Forestales de Lourizán, Estación Fitopatológica de Arenero, Centro de Investigaciones Agrarias de Mabegondo and Misión Biológica de Galicia) and international institutions (Germany, Switzerland, United States, Portugal and Greece), University of Extremadura and two centers of the University of A Coruña (Institute of Geology and Faculty of Sciences) which offers the student a wide range to choose the subject related to agricultural and forestry production in Galicia and the Atlantic biogeographic region of Europe.

At present, with the rapid evolution of engineering and applied sciences, the need to train specialists in the modeling and numerical simulation of processes that come from the industrial or business field is evident, so that, in these fields, promote from the University the transfer of knowledge and the incorporation of doctors to the R & D & i departments, with training aimed at optimizing processes, reducing costs, improving the quality of products, designing new technologies, increasing safety, reducing environmental pollution, etc.

The international doctoral program in “Agriculture and Environment for Development” provides students with advanced methodological tools for both basic and applied research. It is an inter-university program, taught by specialists from different disciplines, who have extensive and recognized research activity. The participation of directors from different countries provides global training and allows access to technical, bibliographical and human resources.

The effective protection of the right to food security requires a comprehensive approach that considers the risks associated with food from farm to table, and that considers all possible perspectives. It also takes into account in a very particular way the growing importance of nutritional risks, given the worrying prevalence of obesity today and mainly in children and adolescents.

This doctoral program aims to provide the society of specialist professionals in rural areas and civil engineering with an adequate ability to diagnose existing problems and with knowledge to solve them from applied research typical of the field of Engineering, with special emphasis on in research, development and transfer of results. This degree provides a response to a growing demand from applied professionals and researchers, since it is intended to provide students with advanced and quality scientific and technological training, thus contributing to rural and civil development.

The program aims to continue with the quality training of researchers in the field of the molecular bases of human diseases. Research in human health is a priority axis of the different knowledge management and innovation programs, both at the regional, state and European level.

The teachings of the Doctorate of Environment and Natural Resources at USC has a long history with more than 30 years of experience in postgraduate courses and doctoral program.

The Doctorate Program in Veterinary Medicine and Health comes from the update of that first Doctorate Program at the Lugo Campus called Introduction to Research in Animal Pathology (1989) to the different state and regional legislation on doctoral studies, and that Its fundamental purpose was to train doctors who could develop the highest academic, administrative and professional positions; This statement is confirmed by the excellent curricula of the doctoral students who graduated from our Department.
