Geography combines natural and social sciences to explore human interaction with the environment and the social, political, economic and cultural forces that shape it. Whether you love the outdoors, are concerned about human impact on the environment, or want to design better future communities, geography is the perfect field for you! All geography courses are university-transferable and may be counted towards a 2-year, 60 credit, multidisciplinary Associate Degree of Arts.

The Minor in Geography is a flexible program that offers students the choice of focusing on a specific Geography sub-discipline or following courses of interest in both Human and Physical Geography. Either way, the Minor establishes a comprehensive understanding of conceptual knowledge and applied skills supporting further study in Geography or related fields, engaged citizenship, and introductory employment in the public and private sectors.

Cultural geography is the interdisciplinary study of spatial practices through which individuals and sociocultural groups create meaningful environments and ascribe order to landscapes, nature, and the terrestrial realm as a whole. Drawing from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, the discipline examines the ways in which humans experience, define, delimit, and shape spaces and places through time. This course is a hands-on introduction to major themes of cultural geography, with regular project work and several field trips. Independent studies and several group excursions in a variety of wild, agricultural, small town, and urban landscapes in the Berkshires and beyond will provide practice in research techniques including field journal writing; the use of narratives, oral histories, archives, and literary sources; map reading and interpretation; and basic cartography.

UFSC Geography Program offers two types of degrees: an undergraduate degree that prepares for recognition activities, surveys, geo-economic and physico-geographical studies, and other tasks in the general and specific fields of Geography, and an undergraduate teaching degree that prepares students for a career in primary and secondary school teaching. The program belongs to the Department of Geosciences at the School of Human Sciences and Philosophy. It is linked to five specific areas of this department: physical geography, human geography, cartography, geology and oceanography.

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Environmental Geography is an undergraduate program that integrates the study of environmental science and geography. It focuses on understanding the interactions between humans and the environment, exploring environmental issues, and developing sustainable solutions. Here are some key aspects and topics typically covered in a BA in Environmental Geography program: Environmental Science Fundamentals: Students learn foundational concepts in environmental science, including ecosystems, biodiversity, natural resource management, pollution, climate change, and sustainability. They gain a holistic understanding of environmental processes and human impacts on the Earth's systems.

Immediate crises, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, and ongoing challenges, such as overuse and pollution of ecosystems, point to the importance of studying the intersection of earth processes with human societies. Students interested in understanding these interactions as they are approached both by Earth Science and by Geography can elect an interdisciplinary major that combines these two disciplines. In Earth Science, students gain an understanding of natural processes that impact the distribution and use of resources such as water, fossil fuels, and soil, as well as natural hazards such as climate change, tsunamis, and earthquakes. In Geography, students learn about the spatial distribution of physical and human phenomena and how human societies are shaped by, and also change, the natural world.

A Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Environment and Physical Geography is an undergraduate program that combines the study of the Earth's physical processes with a focus on environmental systems and sustainability. Jobs may be found in all areas, from drilling for oil in the middle of the ocean, to conservation work in tropical ecosystems. Geography, a word derived from the Greek for earth writing, is the study of the biosphere and the human and nonhuman forces that have shaped the Earth's diverse terrestrial environments through time. A discipline with roots in classical antiquity, geography has been called the Mother of the Sciences, an epistemic claim derived from the close relationship between exploration, mapping, and the production of knowledge. Critical geography is the continuing pursuit of geographic knowledge combined with the analysis of power dynamics in the production of spatial knowledge and the experiences and practices that constitute space and place in everyday life.

Choosing a minor in Geography can provide you with valuable knowledge and skills related to spatial analysis, human-environment interactions, and global perspectives. Here are some key aspects and potential benefits of pursuing a minor in Geography: Spatial Analysis Skills: Geography minors gain expertise in spatial analysis techniques, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cartography, remote sensing, and spatial statistics. These skills are valuable in various fields such as urban planning, environmental science, business analytics, and geographic information science (GIScience).

You are not required to have studied Geography previously, but students are expected to have at least a B grade (or equivalent) in GCSE Mathematics and an A grade (or equivalent) in GCSE English Language.

As a geography major or minor you will learn about the impacts of social, economic, environmental, and political processes that shape spaces and places, the science of earth systems, the human dimensions of global environmental and climate change, and the use of geographic information science (GIS) and remote sensing techniques to represent and analyze data and knowledge at different spatial scales.

Geography GCSE is an interesting subject, which will help develop your communication skills as well as your map reading, graphical and ICT skills. This course involves lots of debate and discussion, as well as problem solving and practical work. You will study a range of relevant topics including: Living with the Physical Environment; Challenges in the Human Environment and Geographical Applications.
