Advanced Apprentice Level 3 Units studied may include: Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others, analysing the construction industry and built environment, applying plaster materials to produce complex internal surfaces, applying render to produce complex external surfaces, health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries and preparing and running in-situ moulds.

The Aboriginal Construction Program provides an opportunity to gain skills and knowledge that give a head start in the construction industry with the benefit of learning coastal First Nations construction history and methods. Developed in consultation with the coastal First Nation's communities this program is designed for aboriginal learners with components that include recognition of cultural issues regarding education and traditional construction as well as skills development in areas such as mathematics and communications.

The carpentry trade can be a stepping-stone to unlimited possibilities. Carpenters may advance to foreman, subcontractor, construction superintendent, or contractor. They are involved in every phase of construction and create the base buildings that most trades will follow in the construction cycle. An Advanced Site Carpenter will normally work on a building site, or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and installing complex and often bespoke building components e.g. high quality doors, shaped linings, staircases with turns, complex wall and floor units, erecting bespoke structural carpentry (inclined roofs and joists) and erecting complex roof structures (e.g. inclined roofs with hips, valleys and dormers).

During the 1 year course, learners will have the opportunity to develop their essential life skills such as communication, numeracy and IT skills whilst also attending additional sessions to help improve their employability. With a successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Multiskills, learners will have the opportunity to apply for a foundation course in any one of the four core trades. The three core trades are: Carpentry, Painting and Decorating, and Brickwork. Course attendance will be three days a week at college.

Carpenters build and repair a vast array of structures made of wood, wood-substitutes and other materials. Many work for construction companies, contractors and maintenance departments while others are self-employed. Carpenter is a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program. Carpenters assemble and erect forms for concrete, wood and metal frame construction and use plans and instruments to prepare for excavating and shoring. On smaller projects, they direct concrete placement, and install exterior and interior finish materials such as siding, doors, windows and cabinets.

The building trades department provides the student with a comprehensive education in Carpentry. This program is designed to meet experienced carpenters' growing need to build Tribal housing and other commercial structures. Besides specific carpentry skills, students will gain proficiency in such areas as work ethic, job application, and basic education skills.

This program is delivered over 3 years.

Entry Requirements: Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including maths and English, trade specific experience or a trade relevant level 1 qualification with maths and English at grade 3 or above (or Functional Skills level 1 or above).
