Our Secondary Education degree prepares candidates to work in the general education classroom at the middle and high school levels. Instructors carefully structure and coordinate field experiences, giving students the opportunity to practice several teaching methods that will prepare them for a successful student teaching experience and career. A signature part of the Secondary Education program at Loras is the Professional Development School (PDS). Each Loras student will participate in diverse field experiences in technology-rich public and private schools.

So, you’ll not only hone your skills in mathematical concepts and applications, but you’ll also acquire a solid foundation in educational methods, learning and development, and instructional technologies.

As a middle and high school teacher, you’ll combine your passion for a particular subject with your role as an advocate, collaborator, and leader in the classroom. To prepare for a career teaching in a middle school or high school, you'll combine a secondary education major with one of our subject-focused majors. Carroll University’s secondary education program provides you with the knowledge and skills to be a successful educator in a middle school and high school setting. You’ll study equitable and inclusive teaching practices, the role of inquiry in teaching and learning, and methods for content area teaching. In our secondary education program, you'll major in the subject you want to teach: biology, chemistry, English, environmental science, history, mathematics, political science, psychology, or sociology and obtain licensure as a teacher in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies. You develop depth in your content area, as well as the breadth of knowledge you will need to teach concepts across various grade levels. Get certified to teach 4th through 8th grade in Georgia with Brenau University's online Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education. Graduate ready to take the Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators (GACE) exam and choose two concentrations in language arts, mathematics, reading, science or social studies to build expertise in specific subject areas. You will complete in-person field experiences and a semester of student teaching to launch your career as an educator.

In the secondary education program, you will have experience planning and teaching lessons in your content area as you complete at least 175 hours of field experience prior to your residency (student teaching). The Illinois State Board of Education recognizes North Central College as fully accredited in art, biology, chemistry, physics, English, history, math, music, and foreign language licensure in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.

The Education Specialist in School Psychology program will provide you with the theoretical and practical skills needed to be an effect school psychologist.
